The Cape Sugarbird (Promerops cafer) is an endemic species of South Africa. This photo was taken in the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden near Cape Town.
The sugarbirds are a genus of birds without many species. They are restricted to southern Africa and resemble Sunbirds but may be more closely related to Australian honeyeaters, source. For this reason, the Cape Sugarbird was one of my prized target species for the few days we were in the area.
I'm not sure what type of flower this is but it could be native to the area or planted by the staff at the Garden. If anybody has ideas let me know!
I would highly recommend going to check out Kirstenbosch if you find yourself staying in Cape Town. We took a tour bus from downtown and the gardens themselves are fantastic and nestled into the side of a mountain. There were many birds throughout the gardens as well, so bring your binoculars :p (And don't forget to go see the penguins!)
