Sexed Males With Feathers

A problematic task to identify within some species, short of capturing them tipping the tail feathers then knowing what you looking for, well here we go without pain, photograph and research....

Southern Fiscal Lanius collaris Only way to differentiate adult male from female, the female has slight rufous patch above the leg beneath the wing (lower flank).

IMG_0674.JPG

Male above a little high up on the branch, below the female with slight rufous patch, yup that is how you know the difference between these two!

IMG_1040.JPG

The Cape weaver Ploceus capensis Handsome male sitting watching me singing in a harsh, rather hysterical sizzle, still delightful to watch and hear when in full song.

IMG_1572.JPG

Singing in all directions to make sure he is heard throughout the valley, so front then back photo shoot of this guy giving it his all!

IMG_1573.JPG

Red-winged starling Onychognathus morio A chattering of starlings all together both male and female, how do you know the sexing, females have grey head whereas males a glossy black, makes identification a lot easier.

Now Mister all on his lonesome...

When it comes the the world of male birds many simply splendid array of colours to grow into when mature, no confusion as to which sex they are, this has been another fun topic to find South African species that showcase their male stance in the bird kingdom.

These sightings all in the Drakensberg, taken for sheer pleasure enjoying moments under the African sun.

Some great looking birds there and some good shots. Every time I attempt to photograph a bird it comes out look like a small dot in the distance.

Passionate about photographing all animals and birds, each so different with charming characteristics.

Who's a pretty boy then!

These are gorgeous male birds Joan, I know here it is the males that are generally more colourful. I should see what I have for this one!

Great shots

Joan, your photos are truly beautiful!
A friend and I were at the Kloof SPCA yesterday, and seeing the male and female peacocks there shows just how handsome the fellas are. A guy who works there remarked that although that is the case in the animal kingdom, the opposite is the case with the human species. We had quite a chuckle at that.
Have a wonderful weekend!

Males in bird kingdom do know how to strut their stuff, each spectacular, difficult to say more handsome than the next.

PS: Won't go into human foray at the moment, simply confused!

Love the colors of your Cape Weaver so much..! 😍

When striking up in song this bird can outperform many, thrilling to watch and hear.

Stunning shots! Got to say that we lack very colourful birds, like the Cape Weaver. So bright, so handsome.🙂

Weaver birds in South Africa come and go throughout the land, always delightful to watch them build nesting sites.

This is an absolutely stunning shot!

I was spoiled to about ten minute rendition in watching him perform at the end of day close to where I was, an absolute treat!

The afternoon light goes so well with its sunset colored head. I wonder what it's looking at. So intense!

He was singing his heart out, or chatting, perhaps he knew were the ladies were hiding 🙃 it was a stunning sunset that day as well.

lovely captures all crisp and clear, and birds are not the easiest of subjects. The things males will go through to find a female, it's a hard life

Males know art of performance for ladies in birding, no confusion there at all!

I don't think we have this kind of bird on my side of the earth. He would probably croak on the heat😁😍
I love their color, so handsomely perfect, very dashing! The females birds are so lucky to have males all growing to be loved by them. Like they exist to win over the heart of their beloved....haha. just stick to one and die for it. I Hope all hoooman males will be like them😍🤭🤭😄😄😄
Well, I am lucky! Got me a dashing debonair who will stick with me through heat and cold!

Thank you so much for sharing with us your beautiful awesome birds there in South Africa. Atleast I've seen the birds perhaps the people and the country in the nearest future, whenever that may be!😄😄
Have e a great Sunday Ms. Joan.
Sending some love from the intense heat of the summer sun, Philippines!

Variety of feathers in mating season is so varied in species, summers get hot here as well, at the moment gorgeous rain and cooler weather. Hopefully one day you do get to visit, in the meantime keep your eyes open to the birds in your region, sure to be plentiful as well.

Have a lovely Sunday.

Thanks so much to all involved.

Not only do you have so many cool birds in striking distance from your residency, when you run across them, you take some beautiful pictures.

Thanks for the lesson in identifying these birds, some subtle differences and some easy to tell. I wonder if the female starling's gray scalp got that way because of her male partner? 😁

More than likely gray is due to factors playing in along the lines being harassed. 🙃

Some males hold a striking difference to the female, all beautiful in their own way.
