Great idea for the #SMAP contest this week in the Feathered Friends community.
My entry is not a Headless Chicken, but a Headless Heron. Enjoy this tail shot of a beautiful Blue Heron with head buried in the water chasing a tasty meal. I just missed catching it as it hit the water.
Here it was just before the plunge.
These birds are fairly large, getting up to 55 inches tall. They've been captured on pics even eating snakes and baby alligators!
These long necks give it a tremendous reach below the water!
Have a great week!
Wonderful shots!

Amazing how this bird could eat baby alligator.
Thanks, I would love to catch that on a video shot. Perhaps some other action shots this summer.
There is a heron rookery a short distance up river from me with 25 active nests. We are going to have an abundance of herons this year!
Very cool! It is so strange to see these giant things take off, fly, let alone seeing them in the top of a tree!
Of course it is a very unique bird, its long neck makes it easy to reach some objects that are difficult to see
Beautiful photography my brother ♥️🙏
Thank you, can't even think of keeping up with your output! Looking forward to retirement and more time in a few years to give this great hobby more focus!
Nice shots as always! With all the water down there I bet Florida is a bird lovers paradise!
For sure is, not just birds, but all the other wildlife as well. I am really hoping to get out deeper and see some of the famous Florida Black Panthers in the wild. That will be a first for me. We had mountain lions in Colorado, but there's just something dark and more mysterious with the Black ones.
That would be cool!
Good morning, dear friend @ksteem
What a beautiful bird, very elegant.
What a timely shot! You were able to capture that precious moment of hunting for food.
Beautiful shots. Have a great day.
Well, not the shot I intended for sure, but it did end up being decent, and goes well with the other full body posts.
I just started testing my camera's video capabilities and looking forward to catching some fishing action video shots soon.
That sounds great, there aren't many people sharing fishing videos or footage, it will be great to see it, and a great adventure for you.
Exactly right, Video was one of the main reasons I chose that camera years ago. Just getting around to testing that part of it out this year.
This week's prompt is brilliant and very fun. I'm glad you were able to photograph this heron hiding its head.
Beautiful photos, Mr. @ksteem
Thank you and glad you stopped by to enjoy it!
That's a big bird for sure! As you say the neck is very long too
Amazing how much flexibility and range those birds have with it!
Very cool photo. Beautiful shot.
Thank you. It was a great set that day.
You're welcome, my brother.
Yeah that was a great show, lucky day
