While my family was on holiday in Mexico, they enjoyed watching the Pelicans flying over the Pacific ocean and diving into the waves to fish for their dinner.
This bird can remain in flight for hours at a time using slow, powerful wing beats.
Brown pelicans are the only species of pelican that hunts with such dramatic plunging dives.
Pelicans eat mostly fish and they require up to 4 pounds of fish a day.
They have amazing eyesight and can see a single fish from 70 feet above the water. Once they spot a fish, they fold their wings and drop from the air, diving straight into the water. They usually come back up with a mouthful of fish.
The biggest threat to Brown Pelicans has been people. In the late 1800s pelicans were hunted for their feathers. Then came a time they were hunted because it was thought that they were depleting the fish population. Then the use of the pesticide DDT in the 1940s and ’50s decimated the pelican population by thinning their eggshells.
Although the species is now doing well and has been removed from the endangered species list, threats remain. The disturbance of nesting colonies, birds entangled in monofilament fishing line or caught on fishhooks, and oil or chemical spills still pose a threat to this incredible bird.

We have white pelicans here on the Rock River in Wisconsin for the first time in 100 years! It's fun to see them return in the spring.

Beautiful photos accompanying your story. I have seen the pelicans fishing, and it is really very beautiful to see them as they do . In Nuevitas Bay there used to be a great number of these birds, until they disappeared almost completely due to environmental pollution. Fraternal greetings.

DDT did the same thing to the eggs of the peregrine falcons. Almost made them extinct. Probably the DDT affected other bird species too. Fortunately/luckily the USA banned the usage of the DDT in 1972, and there is a worldwide ban on the agricultural usage of the DDT since 2004.
I have never seen these birds up close, except in a zoo.
Us humans would blame all of our problems on these poor birds if we could. Sad to hear that. What a majestic bird with a wide wing span and that dive to catch its prey!

Great pics. I love the dramatic dive of the brown pelican. I used to see them on Alameda Island in San Francisco. I could watch them forever.
I have never seen these birds before and after reading your post my knowledge has increased.
Dynamic large bird that dives so neatly for food, pity humans have not thought ahead taking care of wildlife in regions.
We have the Pink-backed Pelicans found in different region large bodies of water, wetlands, dams, lakes and slow-moving rivers.
Great White and Pink-backed Pelicans breed in north eastern KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), South Africa, the most southerly area in Africa. Same problem breeding will only take place when water conditions are right in St Lucia/iSimangaliso Wetlands Park.
There are times when I wonder if birds don’t feel pain in their wings because of how they godly all the time, lol
Those are some great pictures. There are some of those around here when I go down to pier. They really are fun to watch when they dive into the water!
