The most common seagulls worldwide are the ones with white feathers. But there are also gray seagulls, which are very common in the coasts of the north of Chile. This color allows them to blend quite well with rocky environment, being a evolutive feature that protect them against depredators.
In this post I share some photos of this bird, so that we can see observe some of its main features. As you can see, sometimes are difficult to differentiate them from the surroundings.
La mayoría de las gaviotas a nivel mundial son las blancas, o buena parte de su plumaje es blanco, pero también hay gaviotas grises, que son muy comunes en las costas del norte de Chile. Este color les permite mimetizarse completamente con las rocas de las costas, siendo este un mecanismo de defensa contra los depredadores. En esta publicación presento una serie de fotos de esta especie, en las cuales se distingue buena parte de las características de esta ave. Como pueden observar, en algunas images, es difícil distinguirlas de las rocas en las cuales se posan.

La cámara usada fue una Sony Alpha 7 with lens Sony FE 24-240mm F3.5-6.3 OSS. Gimp fue usado en la edición de las imágenes. Las fotos fueron tomadas en Antofagasta, Chile.

Indeed. From my previous post, where I mentioned these gray seagulls, I saw that people found this species somehow "exotic", so I decided to post more about it.
