It has a length of 25 cm. In addition to its remarkable mask, its crown is also black. They hide a reddish-yellow crest that they show when they are mating. Their face is contrasted by broad white eyebrows and throat. The large and strong beak is as black as its legs. There is no sexual dimorphism, only the baby birds differ in being paler and with yellow corners.

Although our national bird is the hornero, this bird was to close to being our national bird. It is everywhere, jungle, forest, and rural areas, although it is seen solitary. It is typical to have this bird present in your life, even if only for its call or song. Children know it's time to go to school because of his sing, and if you stay up late you know you did it because you hear him. He is basically our crowing rooster. I have friends with chicken coops and I can swear that the Benteveo crows before the roosters.

Si bien nuestro pájaro nacional es el hornero, esta ave se quedó a nada de serlo. Está en todos lados, selva, bosques, y áreas rurales, aunque se lo vea solitario. Es típico tener a esta ave presente en tu vida, aunque sólo sea por su llamado o canto. Los niños saben que toca ir a la escuela por su canto, si te desvelaste sabes que lo hiciste porque lo oyes cantar. Es básicamente nuestro gallo cantor. Tengo amigos con gallineros y puedo jurar que el Benteveo canta antes que los gallos.

It is very typical to use this name affectionately: ['cuchalo al bicho feo] (translation: 'hear the kiskadee, said colloquially. In English "Kiskadee" also derives from the same sing.

It has more voices, like a long, high-pitched shout. It also sings at dawn, shaking its head and showing its hidden crest. It can also make a rattle with its beak that I got to hear and see only once. I couldn't figure out if it was because it was dawn, or because it was facing another of same species.

He has a very bandit-like behavior that reminds me of raccoons, is opportunistic and fast. I usually leave bird food, but it will eat anything it can find, dog or cat food, cookies, insects, frogs, lizards and even baby birds of other species. It looks like a kingfisher, and also dives for fishing.

Taking pictures of this bird is very difficult, because it never likes to be noticed. When it detects another living being it usually flies fast and light, even with other birds it is distant and never comes down if there are pigeons or thrushes. Even so, sometimes it seems to be curious to interact with humans and becomes very funny when it allows itself to be seen and interact. Many times it is inevitable not to want to imitate its sing and when you do it in front of it, you can see how it moves its head sideways, like when a dog or a cat is confused.

Sacarle fotos a esta ave es muy difícil, porque nunca le gusta que se percaten de su presencia. Cuando detecta otro ser vivo suele emprender vuelo rápido y ligero, incluso con otras aves es distante y nunca baja si hay torcazas o tordos. Aún sí a veces parece que siente curiosidad por interactuar con humanos y llega a ser muy divertido cuando se deja ver e interactuar. Muchas veces es inevitable no querer imitar su canto y cuando lo haces delante de este, puede verse como mueve su cabeza hacia los lados, como cuando un perro o un gato están confundidos.
