Read this and weep.

One day your children, or their children, will only see this in a museum.

I downloaded the latest Birdlife extinctions report, and the reading was frightening.

Our health depends on and is interlinked with the health of our birdlife populations, and sadly the Red List is growing by the day.
One in every eight bird species is at risk of extinction, due mainly to the actions of mankind destroying the bird's habitats. So not only are we destroying the ocean life with our plastic littering, we are also destroying birdlife by removing their forests and habitats.

This is an African Oyster Catcher (Haematopus moquini) and they are on the red list of endangered birds.

This fifth edition of BirdLife’s flagship State of the World’s Birds report summarises what birds, as barometers for planetary health, can tell us about the state of nature, the pressures upon it, and the solutions in place and needed. The data paint a deeply concerning picture – nearly half of all bird species are in decline, with more than one in eight at risk of extinction. The pressures causing these declines are well understood, and the vast majority are driven by human actions. The challenges to conservation are escalating, and time is running out. The coming years will be the ‘critical decade’ to act.

The latest global Red List assessments for birds show that 1,409 species are considered threatened: 755 are listed as Vulnerable, 423 as Endangered and 231 as Critically Endangered. This equates to 12.8% of all extant bird species, or just over one in eight. A further 1, 002 species are categorized as Near Threatened, meaning that they approach the threshold for qualifying as globally threatened.

I have taken this from the full report that one can download in different languages to read the full story and as I said above, it is frightening to see what we are doing to our planet. The idea should always be to preserve everything for the future generations, but I am afraid that we are not going about it very well. It is a great experience to see the actual live birds and it would be no fun for the future generations to see only pictures of them, just like we only see pictures of dinosaurs.

The report also details the current actions that are taken to prevent the extinctions of the species, but so much more can be done.
It is our responsibility to do all that we can to reverse this debilitating situation.
Nuff said!

Beautiful shots ❤️

Thank you!

It's funny because I thought I had been seeing more oystercatcher in recent years... But maybe that's since I saw a sign at Nature's Valley explaining their situation (2nd rarest coastal bird?) but then seeing quite a few on a walk there because I was looking for them? They're super easy to recognise as well!

They also have a sanctuary here where the oystercathers are breeding, but it is not enough to restore their endangerment. Yes, they are easily recognized, but we don't see large flocks of them, as they only appear in couples or singles. So the fight for preservation continues.

Did you hear about the farmer that fed his chickens avocados?
All you could hear around there was “guac, guac, guac, guac.”

Unfortunately everything is changing, the weather, nature, climate and not in a good sense though.

So true and it is written that in those days you will see things that you have never seen before.
Scary, but true.

A friend of mine has a private bird park on the Vaal River where he has endangered birds from all over Africa. Two of each like Noah's Ark given to him by the various Park Boards. Need to visit him again and do a post as it is rather magical and takes a good 4 hours to walk around.

Sounds wonderful and I so wish that we were still up there, as I visited the Vaal River constantly. We had a few great spots for photography below the Barrage and even ended up in a big flood one year.
Looking forward to your photos and it sounds great.

Things are changing and not for the better. Although there are people out there trying to help and change things. Especially with birds and animals that are almost extinct. Let’s don’t loose hope…
And do whatever we can do.

Yes, the days are growing darker and we are all light creators, so all that we can do is to make an effort to make things better.

Shalom.

Exactly like that Zac… let’s make the effort. I do.

Good night 😴

My pleasure. Let me treat you with a !PIZZA. Sorry, I will be brief today. I had such an extensive day that just returned home. Obtained a cool UHD monitor for my wife, but had problems to solve -- and still have it unplugged. No time for photos and blogging.

No need for sorry, as you have to do what you must do.
I am sure that you will solve the problems and in fact I am glad that you are taking your time to solve it, as quick fixes always turn out to be expensive afterwards.

I see the black oystercatcher along the coastline here in the Garden Route Plett. They are nesting here and indeed considered endangered.
