Complementing last week's SMAP contest, where the theme was Male birds, this week we have...Female birds! Completely fair! :)
I've posted a little bit of geekiness on the male birds post, so for this one will leave the technicalities aside, and just focus on the females; tried to find the correspondent females to all the species I published on my last post, on the same order, but only managed to get a few of them. Off we go, starting with flying kicks!
Couldn't find a photo of a female alone, but here she is on the left, trying to KO the male. See the difference on the head, it misses the bright grey colour of the male; probably best way to tell them apart.
Next one? Lady sparrow!
Here the different is even more apparent; apart from lacking the black on the head, they don't have the black throat and chest that males exhibit.
Next on the list is one of the exceptions for me. Males are usually the more coloured ones, but in this case...
... the females have a few more colours! Contrasting with the all black males, females are brown, with white spots and stripes.
Last female with a corresponding male on last post is Ms. peacock (peahen is the correct form).
Lacking all the bright colours and the stunning tail of the males, but still a beauty. These were taken in an urban park, in southern Portugal. I wasn't expecting to find them there!
And they weren't alone. I've seen several females, and all with offspring. It was the first time I saw baby peacocks.
Ending with another beauty, this one a hunter.
Female kestrels have a brown, not grey, head. And their tails have horizontal bars all the way down, contrasting with the males, that only have a bar at the tip of the tail feathers; hence, it's very easy to recognize the female here, especially if she decides to show us her back.

True, completely forgot that part! It was the only female chaffinch I could find on my photos. Duh. 😁 Will edit and place the second one, if possible, or just disregard me for the contest this time! :) !LUV
