It is a relatively common bird in Costa Rica, it can be found solitary, in open places, such as on the seashore, river mouths and lagoons.
When hunting, it tends to stay still for a long time on a branch or on the ground until it finds prey. They walk very slowly and when assumed they tend to fully stretch their neck diagonally.

Es un ave relativamente común en Costa Rica, se le puede encontrar solitario, en lugares abiertos, como en la orilla del mar, bocas de ríos y lagunas.
Cuando está cazando tiende permanecer quieto durante mucho rato sobre una rama o en el suelo hasta que encuentra una presa. Caminan muy lentamente y cuando se asuma suele estirar completamente su cuello de forma diagonal.
