WhatsApp Image 2023-02-02 at 6.46.43 PM.jpeg

Greetings bird lovers, in this publication I bring you an experience I had trying to help a lovebird that fell from its nest.

I take Isis, our dog, down every day to walk, sunbathe and relieve herself. There are a lot of trees in that place and I found a baby lovebird at the base of the tree. It was very scared and was trying to hide. There are a lot of cats around there, she must have had a short time to fall because they would have eaten her.

I grabbed her and she was flapping her wings but still not flying, I took her to the house hoping that she would recover and continue her development until she could fly. I looked for a little box to put her in and put some old flannels to protect her from the cold. She tried to get out and walked fast, and hid behind the furniture.

The first day my daughter, who is studying veterinary medicine, checked her and apparently she had no wounds and still had down on her head and chest, and under her wings, her feathers had to come out in those places.

What to feed her and how to feed her.

This is something delicate when it comes to birds, because you have to know what they eat, some especies eat insects, fruits and other seeds.I searched the internet for information, some videos explained how to do it, she or he was not so chubby to give her very liquid food and she was already drinking water by herself. These birds eat seeds and according to what my daughter told me and some veterinary doctor friends I consulted I started to give her chopped corn, soaked in water overnight, to soften it and also cooked rice. Of course she did not eat alone and I gave it to her inside her beak very carefully so as not to drown her.

I thought she liked the corn but the rice was very sticky and I think it softened her stool. From what I found out, the color and consistency of the stool is an indication of whether everything is going well, because they should be a dark green or brown with white and a bit hard in consistency. That's how they were when she arrived, but as the days went by she started making them more watery and light green - I became concerned about what I was seeing and didn't give her any more rice but started giving her oatmeal and birdseed to vary the food.

Every day I fed her three times a day.

I tried to keep her warm.

In the morning I would put her in the sun and she would stand there very still and sometimes she would ride on some things flapping her wings, this made us happy because we thought she was getting stronger and when her feathers came out she would be able to fly. That was my hope.

WhatsApp Image 2023-02-02 at 6.46.43 PM.jpeg

But we were sad to see that as the days went by, even though she was trying to peck at food, she became weaker and weaker until one morning, a week after we brought her home, she died in my hands.

What happened? We do not know, it is possible that the feeding was not the most adequate, or that she was hit when she fell or that she needed her mother and the warmth of her siblings in the nest to survive. The mother knows what food to give her young, how much and how to give it to them, and she knows when they should fly and leave the nest and it is very difficult to simulate her care. Despite all our efforts we could not keep her alive.

Reflecting on this experience, which was not the first time I have tried to raise chicks of birds and pigeons that have fallen out of the nest, I would say that very few have survived and the reasons are mainly biological. Even though there are videos where positive experiences are shown, there is a reality that is difficult to overcome. As a veterinarian we consulted about the possibility of saving the turtledove said, his answer was very natural and some may think it was insensitive.

When a chick falls out of the nest it may be for several reasons, but among these it is possible that it is not fit to survive. Nature is very wise and by catching that chick that has fallen, we are preventing another animal eat it, a food that may be necessary for its survival, it is the law of nature.

But despite this very logical explanation, there is the sensitivity, trying as much as possible to help a life that is in danger, I think this is something instinctive. I could not leave him there, I knew that the cats would not take long to find him and I wanted to give him a chance. And it comforts me to think that he died in a place where we gave him care and love and he didn't die alone and in the claws of a feline.
