Wednesday Walk with Many Feathered Friends - Revisiting the Goslings and New Ducklings...

in Feathered Friends4 years ago

Our walk today toke a change in direction because our usual route up the hill was too wet and there were too many mosquitoes so we stuck to the road. This was a good thing for we got to visit the goslings once more - they have really grown since I first photo them shown in my post here. I spotted them at the edge of the pond where they were busy grooming themselves and a couple of the young ones were off feeding.

In the video I show below you can see them grooming and towards the end a male golden-eye duck comes flying in to where the female was sitting on it's nest.
Have a look...

Here is that big male stretching it's wings with the others grooming and one goslings feeding.

Here is one more video of the goslings feeding with the sound of the killdeer. The killdeer must have had a nest in the field by the pond for I had seen and heard it there a few times. I never got a picture of it but it's call where it says it's name is quite clear - have a listen...

Walking down the road we visited another pond.

On closer look we found there were some Barrow's Golden-eye Ducks there and further searching the pond we found a lovely surprise!

The male was busy grooming himself too.

He did some stretching then swam off with his mate.

That surprise I talked about was a Bufflehead duck with her cute little ducklings. She had a big brood of ducklings - over a dozen!

Here's a closer look at those cuties!

While I was watching the ducklings the female gold-eye duck swam by. She is quite a bit bigger than the Bufflehead. The Female Bufflehead didn't seem to mind her being so close.

The Buffleheads are diving ducks and these young ducklings were eager to dip under the water to feed. They are so cute and energetic. It gave me a smile watching them bobbing in the water! Have a look - they are too cute...

At the end of that video the little ducklings had found a log to climb up on for some grooming and further feeding. Here is an image of those cuties on the log -

Over at the edge of the pond I found a Kestral hawk resting in the tree top.

And over by the powerline there were a couple of robins calling.

Also on the power line were a flicker and a sparrow.

Down below another tree sparrow was calling from the bush.

On the way home there were some bluejays making some noise in the spruce trees. I caught a good close up of one as it checked me out.

I'm just enthralled with all the birdlife found by our home in the Boreal forest with the different bird calls filling the air.

I hope you enjoyed them too!

Singing songs of wisdom all around the forest, little ones growing readying to move when Autumn fall arrives, life doing full circle in the forest.

Lovely variety of birds close to home to enjoy, yes those pesky mosquitoes would keep me on the road as well, little blood hounds always enjoy my blood.

@tipu curate

Do you get a lot of mosquitoes in your area?
They were just swarming us this year. I have had to wear a mosquito net over my face when I was garden. Mosquitoes and sand flies - not a good mix!
Thank-you for the tip!

We don't get the swarming like you, however if I go into the garden for a minute or two they will find me!

You mention sand flies, we get sand fleas that can leave your lower legs and ankles full of bites when you step into them in no time at all.

Really don't like things that make me itchy and scratchy....

Wow! This is an awesome WALK! Totally Make Me SMILE! Love all the photos of the ducks and the birds...
