🦉 The common chaffinch or simply the chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs)

  • fringilla (lat.) - finch; fi nco (Old German), fi nc (Old English)
  • coelebs coelebs (lat.) - single, idle, unmarried

In the spring, when the snow is already actively melting, you can wait for the arrival of these birds. As a rule, this is the very beginning of April, and it is still quite cool. These birds migrate in large flocks, and in the spring the males fly to their last year's places, occupy territories and begin to sing actively, thereby marking their territories. Females arrive later, several days or a week. And not all of them fly to their usual territories of last year.

I recently learned that these birds sometimes have “polygamy.” A male can have several females and take care of them and their offspring. The females incubate the eggs, and the male carries food for them. As a rule, these are insects, but they can also be plant foods.
