🦉 The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)

  • Dendrocopos Greek: dendron tree, coptō to hit, beat
  • major (lat.) big

Everyone knows this bird very well. It can always be found in mixed or coniferous forests at any time of the year.
At the very beginning of spring, when the sun begins to warm and the snow begins to melt, birds begin to look for a partner. And this is accompanied by the well-known drumming on the trees. The resulting pair begins to make a hollow; this is mainly done by the male. Near the hollow, the birds behave secretly and unnoticed, but once I was lucky enough to catch them doing this.

In autumn, nomadic through the forests begin. Woodpeckers often join other birds, forming a mixed flock.
At this time, woodpeckers feed mainly on the seeds of coniferous trees, which they take out from the cones, having previously made a hole in the tree so that it is convenient to insert it there, the so-called “woodpecker forge”.

Thank you. I call these tail feathers "red panties"😀
