🦉 The Eurasian sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus), also known as the northern sparrowhawk

  • Accipiter accipere (lat.) to grab
  • nisus according to ancient Greek mythology Nisus (or Nisus), king of Megara, and his Skill's daughter, who betrayed her father because of her love passion for the enemy - the Cretan King Minos, were turned by the gods into birds of prey

These guys live in a variety of forests. but the most important thing for them is forests with clearings. Actually, in such a place I met this predator. This is a mixed forest near which there is a clearing and a railway.
I met him at the very beginning of the forest, when the snow had just begun to melt in the forest (and there was practically no snow in the city anymore). I heard the high-pitched squeak of tits. which means danger from the air, and began to look around. This gentleman was sitting on a branch.

These predators feed mainly on small birds, sometimes they manage to catch larger prey, such as a thrush or even a crow. But for such “difficult” prey, they specifically use an ambush attack.
