🦉 The Eurasian siskin (Spinus spinus)

  • Spinus spinos (Greek) unidentified bird mentioned Aristotle and other ancient Greek. authors.

The Latin name spinus (from spin meaning to rotate) highlights this bird's agile behavior. Only in the spring, during the mating season, can males be seen perched on a branch and singing.
Identifying the siskin among other birds is easy. It stands out with its bright yellow plumage. The male has a black cap and a small black spot under his beak. The female, however, is less conspicuous: she has plain plumage and no cap or spot under her beak.

These birds live primarily in coniferous forests, sometimes in mixed forests. However, they are not tied to their nesting sites and are eternal nomads, flying and settling wherever food is available.
