🦉 The white-backed woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos)

📚 Dendrocopos (Greek): dendron - tree, coptō - to hit, beat
📚 leucotos (Greek): leukos - white, nōton - back

This motley friend is much less common than his relative, the great spotted woodpecker.
He differs from him in the white color of the lower back and black strokes on the sides; his undertail is pink. In addition, the cap of the male is completely red, the entire length of the head (in males).

This species of woodpecker loves difficult forests with a large presence of old and diseased trees. Actually, they nest in the same rotten trees.
Another one of the differences from the great spotted woodpecker is the fact that the white-backed woodpecker does not hammer cones in winter.
