Feathered Friday - Aerial Battle

Here is an aerial battle and some other birds for this #featheredfriday by @melinda010100

I spotted a large red tailed hawk sitting peacefully on a dead tree.

Then suddenly he let out a loud scream and started flying.

At first I thought I somehow scared him off the tree by trying to get a closer shot.

Then as he flew behind some leaves I noticed a little attack helicopter.

Once out on the other side of the leaves the little attack bird was already on his back.

I tried getting shots of the bird riding on his back but my camera was too slow in writing files. This is the only shot you can see the little beak ready to peck the head of the huge raptor.

Meanwhile at the swamp there were many birds trying to cool off in the summer heat. When I took this photo I thought there was only the great blue heron, but now that I look closer there are all kinds of ducks and geese and possibly some grebes or coots.

Most of the birds were panting from the summer heat like this little waxwing.

The bluebird seemed fine in the heat, perhaps this might have been the little beak that was trying to peck the red tail.

There were quite a few goldfinches out and this guy even stayed still long enough for a few photos.

I caught him at the right place where the setting sunlight was to my back lighting him up perfectly. Usually I end up on the wrong side of the bird and only see a silhouette.

That's all for this #featherdfriday :-)

Great shots! Those little birds are so brave to take on one who could easily eat them!

They know they can outmaneuver them easily. I wonder if this one might have been a bluebird or possibly a flycatcher of some kind.

Very cool!

One day I'll get a clear photo of a smaller bird riding the back of the poor hawk.

I will look forward to this)!

Yay! 🤗

These are great photos! How lucky to be able to get a picture of that little helicopter in pursuit of the hawk! And I didn't know there was a feathered friday. I shall contribute!

If my camera wasn't so slow in writing burst shots I could have had a nice one showing the little bird right between his wings. Maybe next time. I'll be on the lookout for your #featheredfriday post (crows I'm guessing?)

lol, I have a reputation! But I managed to squeeze in an osprey this week with ten minutes to spare per my clock.
Even with the best camera technology, I think it's still challenging to get pictures of birds in flight, especially when there is stuff in the background.

Yeah birds in flight is tough, fortunately this was in a prairie so I was able to get some clear sky shots. I'll be looking forward to your osprey shots, I've only seen them a couple times around here, at first they kind of look like juvenile bald eagles.

Great series of shots! The predator is just beautiful!

Poor guy was getting picked on by possibly a bluebird.

Very extraordinary picture.
The eagle is a smart animal that is very fast in flight.

He was big and slow compared to the smaller aerodynamic bird that landed on his back.

Yes.
I looked at his back.
Lol, but this eagle can't do anything about it.
