Feathered Friday - Prairie Sightings

Here are a few sightings in the prairie for this #featheredfriday

This particular prairie is great for spotting yellow warblers. I was only able to barely catch this one shot before it flew off into the leaves. All the rest of my shots show little yellow patches between leaves that barely look like a bird.

A young blue jay was savagely killing something in a tree.

It seems to have found a large caterpillar.

Sadly my best shot of the worm came out unfocused. So no identification on its lunch for now...

Speaking of bird lunches, this poor fritillary is all beat up. Usually storm or constant pestering by birds causes their wings to get like this.

I suspect this Eastern Kingbird might be to blame for the fritillary wings.

As usual there are plenty of sparrows in the prairie. They are having a great time eating all the blackberries everywhere.

The song sparrows are belting out their complex calls. Sparrows are tough to get shots of in the prairie as they are usually buried in a bunch of sticks.

Someone keeps gluing bluebirds to the sides of trees around here...

I saw a nice red headed woodpecker but unfortunately this guy was in the middle of a swamp on a dead tree. I still have yet to get a nice close-up shot of one of these guys. Might need to bring galoshes next time. But I'm sure by the time I got close enough to this guy in the swamp it would just fly off to another swamp.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

Nice captures. I think all Bluejays are savages 😆 We have lots of goldfinch around here and I always suspect there are some yellow warblers around in the mix but we don't find them.

Maybe all the copper headed cowbirds are pushing the yellow warbler eggs out of their nests and planting their own over there. I read that yellow warblers are the primary target of those terrible copper headed cowbirds. Bluejay's are quite the camera dodgers, the only time I can get good shots of them is when they are killing something.

!PIZZA

It was a nice sunny day for photos. I also went to a farm later on that day and saw a bunch of turkeys.

And you also took a good shot of them 😎 It's great to appreciate your captures!

Nice shot

I wish one of the red headed woodpeckers would get as close as that yellow warbler did.

Just like that it's cool bro.
