Ludic memories - From Scrabble to cheating at ONE
"What's your favorite board game?" That's the question the Ready Player One folks posed for today's theme. I like to support this initiative, but I confess they got me thinking about whether I even had a favorite board game. And the truth is, I don't have one that's particularly special, but I do remember four that are significant: two from my childhood, one from when I was older, and another from the present day. So, I'll tell you a little about them.

In my country, there are several very popular board games, many of which are played with the Spanish deck of cards, but I never had the opportunity to learn any of them. Dominoes is also played a lot, but I didn't learn to play that either. The thing is, it wasn't a custom in my household, and since I grew up far from relatives, those opportunities to get together and play never arose. Instead, at home, there were a couple of games that my parents played with their friends, and as a child, I grew up watching them play.

I don't know if it's because my parents were university students in another country that they acquired this habit, but they played the original Scrabble a lot. It's a game where the board has a 15x15 grid of squares where you form words with tiles that have letters, each letter has a value, and you accumulate points as the words become more complex and longer. It was quite damaging, especially for a child's spelling. It wasn't very fun, but when we got to write crazy words, we had a good time.

The other game is quite strange because there's no record of it on the internet. The only thing I found is that it came out in 1985 only in Venezuela. It's called Trivialidades Eduplay, and it was a trivia game with categories like science, history, etc. You had to advance on the squares in the style of Ludo (Parcheesi), with a token that was a pentagon where you placed other small tokens inside, of the color of the category you managed to answer correctly. I don't remember this game much because I was very young, and as I said, there's no trace of the history of this game on the internet, but at home, I still have some of the question cards.

Already older, I remember how much we played what is known in Venezuela as "Stop." I know it's very popular in many countries, but when I was older, I discovered it has different names, such as "Basta," "Tutti Frutti," "Lápiz Quieto," "Alto el Fuego," "Mercadito," and in English, "Categories." The great thing about this game is how people start to invent words. I think that's the fun part, more than the speed with which you finish writing.

Finally, UNO came into our lives. How popular this game has become! But for me, it has recently taken on significance because my young daughter with autism loves to play it. Since she learned to play, she invites the family to play a round. It has been quite a show because she doesn't like to lose, like any child her age, although adults don't either, they just know how to hide it. The thing is, she has tried to cheat and has hidden +4 cards in her clothes before starting to play to get revenge on those who have thrown them at her in the past, which has made these moments very fun and full of laughter, accompanied by her antics.
