Suspension System: Broken Down

in WHEELS!last month

You're driving off road with your Polaris RZR, or in mud with your Jeep Wrangler, or you're driving round Daytona with your Porsche 911 and the left tyres of your car moves on the kurbs.

Hello people it's @kelismart and I'm going to talk about that one thing that makes us enjoy the rides listed above... SUSPENSION.

Suspension helps to maximize tyre and road friction, it provides steering stability, ensures safe drive by absorbing energy from road bumps and other impact like stones and so on and help tyre stay in contact with roads

Components of Suspension

Spring;

It compresses when it meets the irregularities of the roads and release when spring expands

Dampers;

Converts the energy from spring into heat and absorbs the shock

Types of Spring

Leaf Spring
Coil Spring
Torsion Bars

Let me Explain

Leaf Spring a.k.a Laminated spring are steel spring mounted over one another they are most times called semi-eleptical spring as they are bent I that form

Coiled Spring vary in rigidity. They have the same diameter on both end.
Some have different diameter of spring and rod. In the center of spring, a rubber bump stop is installed to smoothen fluctuation and prevent spring damage.

rubber bump stop

Torsion Bars are metal tubes with rod inside. They work by twisting when altered.

Damper

Prevents the chassis from the force caused when a wheel hits a bump and prevents the spring from bouncing continuously. They push the wheel back to the road surface. It is simply a piston filled with oil that separate the chassis from the wheel. When the car hit the bump, the piston is pushed into the casing and is slowed by the oil.

Knuckles

Used to connect the wheel to the suspension system. It is positioned at the front wheel of the car. Wheel will be rotated continuously on the spindle shaft

Anti Sway Bar

A.K.A anti roll bar. They help in comfort and vehicle stability to improve performance the reduced body roll or sway when cornering

Ball Joint

Support lateral and horizontal loads on a car. It works as a rotation axis when a vehicle is turning. Ball Joint consist of a metal housing and stud. The stud is able to swing and rotate in the housing. They have oil which if there's none, they will not function correctly.

Types of Suspension System

Independent Suspension
Non Independently or Rigid Axle Suspension

Let me Explain

Independent Suspension System allows each wheels of the same axle to move independently, implying that the movement of the wheel of one side does not affect the movement of the wheel on the other side on the same axle. The left and right suspension are usually connected with anti sway bars

Types of Independent Suspension

Mac Person Strud

Double Wish bone

Multi link

Trailing arm

In Rigid Suspension System, they wheel are dependent making both wheels on the same axle to work as team.

That's a summary of Suspension.
