Hello everyone around here, I hope you are doing well and your week is off to a great start. At the end of November, my dad had a stroke, this is the sixth one he has had, and it was combined with a diabetic crisis. All this has brought as a consequence some consequences, both physical and emotional.

In this sense, in December he started rehabilitation in an Integral Rehabilitation Room because we do not have at this time to pay for private therapies. Unlike the assistance he received at a public hospital in the area, here at the SRI, they have treated him very well.

For him to have the therapies in this place, we first had to go to another CDI because all the physiatrists in the area had already been sent to Cuba to spend their vacations. From there he was referred and the next day he was already doing his therapies.

Poco a poco

Little by little

The same day he was referred to this SRI that is very close to our house, I went there to find out the hours of the therapies and how the procedure was. The next morning, we were there as early as we could. They started the therapies with heat and current only.

They use infrared lamps to put the heat on the areas to be treated. Then many of the patients move on to electrotherapy. Something that caught my attention is what I believe are the electrodes of the machine, they wet them before putting them on the patient.

Also, they have hydrotherapy machines that don't work every day, because of the water issue. They didn't send my dad to therapy with these, so for the first five days, they only put heat and current on him. That helped him with what came later.

Exercises and more

After those first five days, they started with exercises. These would help him wake up the muscles that were not responding because of the stroke. My dad was left with a left hemiparesis, so his left arm, hand, leg, and foot, although they have strength, do not respond well to the instructions given by the brain.

At the SRI they have a gym with some stretchers and machines, which although they are not the latest generation or in perfect condition, they do their job. With my dad, they started doing some movements in both extremities and little by little they have been adding more exercises. Such as the digital ladder, the treadmill, the exercise bike, a wheel, and pulleys.

This has helped him to regain control over his hand and leg. Although his strength is still feeble. In addition, she also started occupational therapy. The therapist is one of the few non-Cuban employees at SRI and CDI in general. She has been providing him with activities that improve his concentration and mental capacity.

She challenges him to achieve better times by being able to put a puzzle together, to put pieces in order, and also does activities to stimulate the sensitivity of his affected parts.

Incredibly, I can say with great pleasure that the care has been good. We have seen an improvement in my dad's physical condition, although other specialists must treat other sequelae that he has left. I want so much for my dad to get better.

Thank you for making it this far, for reading me and I hope you have a beautiful 2024.
