Before starting, I'd like to apologize as I was not able to be active on this platform due to my final exams. For those who don't know, I am currently enrolled in the BDS program, that is the Bachelor's in Dental Surgery. In less than an year, InshaAllah, I'll be a certified dental surgeon.
Apart from my studies, the past month has been very very busy for the whole family. My eldest brother got married. For someone who's acquainted with the culture of Pakistani weddings, will have an idea how magnanimous the whole events are. Even though I'm a supporter of small intimate ceremony but it's a personal choice really. The wedding doesn't consist of only a single event in which the bride and the groom tie the knot, instead the events are divided into a lot of parts:
- Mangni
Mehndi
Maiyon
Nikkah
Valima
These are the main four events out of the dozens of events that take place for a wedding. I'll explain these events shortly for you all:
- Mangni: Mangni basically refers to engagement in which the groom's family visits the bride's family and the two are engaged together with an exchange of rings. It's only a close family event.
- Mehndi: Mehndi is a family gathering that takes place at the groom's house where the groom spends time with his family members. The groom gets henna applied on his face and hands. There are songs. There's dancing. There's sweet dishes and everything you can imagine in a Pakistani household.
- Mayon: Mayon is an event intended for the bride. After the engagement the bride isn't supposed to see the groom. All the close family and relatives gather at the bride's place.
- Nikkah: Nikkah is the official wedding. Where the groom and the bride sign their Nikkah Naama. The wedding papers.
- Valima: Valima is to be done by the groom. It's a Farz, ie, an obligation in Islam. You can't skip this. The rest of the pre Nikkah events are just cultural and not really necessary.
In this part 1 of my brother's wedding, I'll be talking all about the:
MEHNDI
One of the most wholesome event of the whole wedding season. Period. My aunts and uncles had already shifted to our house prior the wedding season. This is another thing that I love about being a Pakistani. The close family ties. We help each other in everything. Literally everything. Anyway, the mehndi had to be started at 9 pm so the preparations and the decorations started around 3 pm. It was mainly my younger cousin who did everything. She loves decorating places.
The groom is not to be entered at the place of the mehndi, ie, usually the lounge. He can only enter when he's called and that too, with his brothers at his side.
Anyway, before the groom(my brother) was invited, we all sat there together, sang songs, danced and took a lot of pictures. Another thing that you might want to know is that we all wear a Yellow dupatta. I dont know the logic behind it, but I loved it.
Finally it was time for the Groom's big entry. We're a total of 5 brothers and all 4 of us were sent outside to accompany our brother inside. He was being incredibly shy and over conscious. Infact he switched the dupatta from me thrice, being indecisive which one looks the best on him. We entered the room and were welcomed with clapping and chants.
Wellll, what next? We sat down, took a lot of pictures, teased our brother, brought the extra member of our family, Arya, my cat, to the party, applied henna on my brother's hands. Let's relive the moment with me through pictures.
This was it from my post. I hope you all enjoyed going through it. Meet you soon with the part 2.
