Eighteen. A number that signifies not just legal adulthood, but a turning point in my life's journey. Today, I'll be sharing my experiences of celebrating my birthday filled with laughter and endless love. So, whether you're about to turn eighteen or simply curious about this exciting chapter of my life, join me as I explore the unexpected lessons and my thrilling beginnings.
Last September 21st, 2023, I turned eighteen, a milestone birthday. While it wasn't the most extravagant celebration, it was the most meaningful because I was surrounded by my loved ones – cousins, distant relatives, and close friends in welcoming my legality. The joy came not from the fancy decorations or a huge buffet of food, but from the simple pleasure of being together. I enjoyed my day because the people I want to be with, is present in my birthday celebration.
I originally didn't expect my birthday to be like that, with a glam decorations and many delicious foods and to be that crowded, because I told my parents that I just want a smaller celebration and a simple one to save money for future use, like for college expenses and everyday use. But then if you just knew my mother and auntie, they're unstoppable! They wanted it there ways. Their love poured into the celebration, proving that sometimes, the simplest gatherings hold the greatest significance. As the birthday girl, I couldn't argue much after all the time and effort they put in, in making my party a blast. Who am I to deny their love and efforts, right?
Sure, a part of me did dream of the fairy tale – a fancy venue, a ball gown, and the symbolic 18 roses, candles, treasures, shots and many more in being in the legal age and a photo booth overflowing with props and a cotillion dance because that what I always see a movie, just like a princess in her own castle. Movies make it seem like turning eighteen is an automatic entrance into a world of luxury. But then I realized celebration isn't about extravagance; it's about togetherness with the people close to my heart. Laughter filled the air as we reminisced about childhood memories. Looking around at those faces, I realized the greatest gift wasn't a flashy party, but the comfort of having them all around me. There were no DJ's or choreographed dances, just genuine smiles and heartfelt conversations. It was a celebration of the bond we share, a bond that has no limit and cannot be exchanged for material things.
The celebration was also extra special because of my classmates and Sir Mandal. Sir Mandal, who like a second father to us, because he treats us with the same care as his own children. Their effort to come and even send a gifts, warms my heart. My heart is full with gratitude for them in making an effort to celebrate and bonded with me, through singing together creating a strong connection and capturing those rare moments together. Those moments will hold a special place in my heart that I will forever keep.
Since I was a child, I longed to grow up quickly, I pray and hope because I want to help my parents, financially. So, that they don't have to work over time even if they're sick because there are worried that their salary for that week is not enough for our expenses everyday, I wanted to ease their burden of long hours work and worry about our bills and debt. But then, here I am now being eighteen, however, has shown me that adulthood comes with a different kind of responsibility especially since I'm the eldest.
As the eldest, my actions and choices become a model for my younger siblings, make a good role model, whether I like it or not. It's a responsibility I take seriously, even if it can feel like a burden at times, demanding a higher level of maturity and responsibility. Imagine being the first one to lead teenage independence, knowing that my actions will affect the way for those who follow. Also the main reason for me to keep on going for the future is my parents, cause everytime I see them, I see a million reasons to keep fighting! I should be successful so that, all their sacrifice will not put to waist.
Eighteen also brings a sense of independence. Movies might portray it as knowing everything, but that's just an illusion. Because even if I'm in my legal age, I still need guidance from my parents and loved ones. While I'm legally an adult, I know there's so much to learn and experience for me in the future.
Here's my short but special message to those who made my birthday a wonderful and memorable.
First of all, Thank you, nanay and tatay making my birthday so special. I appreciate everything you did. You guys are the best! Since I was a child up until now, you gave me your full support and showered me your undying love and I couldn't ask for more. I wouldn't stop thanking God because of all the parents out there he give me, you. I had such a wonderful birthday and I couldn't ask for more for everything that you've done, so much effort into making me feel special. I may be all grown up now, but my birthday is still the best with you guys. Thank you for going all out, even though I originally wanted something simpler one. I love you both!
To my auntie, uncle, and titas, thank you for your unwavering support and financial contributions to make my birthday memorable and extra special.
To all my cousins and grandparents, thank you for always being there to listen for my rants in life, and when I need a shoulder to cry on, and for your love and care.
And to everyone who came to celebrate with me, thank you! I will forever treasure this memories.
This celebration taught me that even the most ordinary moments can be extraordinary when shared with loved ones. As I embark on this new chapter of adulthood, I carry this lesson close to my heart. No matter how grand or simple the celebration, as long as my family is complete, it will be filled with love and happiness.
And now I know what they mean by being eighteen. Eighteen It's not my destination; it's my exciting starting point.
