Well, I will start talking about my grandparents on my dear mother's side (Grandfather José and Grandmother Dioselina). My maternal grandfather sadly I could not meet him because he died before I was born and with my maternal grandmother sadly I could not share much because she died when I was still a very little girl, however I have a few pictures with her and I know from my mom that she was the one who taught me to walk with the help of a cane.

Although I don't have much history with my maternal grandparents they are still my grandparents, I consider them important, I know they were good and respectable people, my grandmother was in life a great nurse, I like to think that somehow they have been with me.

Now with my paternal grandparents I did share a lot (Grandma Josefa and Grandpa Carlos), unfortunately they both died last year because of covid. I shared a lot with my paternal grandparents because we lived close by and then we lived together for four years because my family and I moved in with them to take care of my grandmother who was ill. My grandfather Carlos was in life a cultured man, very intelligent, he had a great library, from which he left me several books. My relationship with my grandfather was good, but particular in the sense that he had a character and certain things in his personality in which I did not agree, so I discussed them with him (my paternal family is very peculiar and I have imposed myself against many things, you can imagine...😅), despite that I loved my grandfather and although he was annoyed with me at the end, I think he also appreciated me, of his grandchildren I was the one who most shared with him.

My grandmother Josefa was a very elegant, quiet and serious woman who unfortunately in her old age suffered from Alzheimer's, which is why we moved to take care of her. I always got along well with my grandmother, she was quiet and so was I, she had a long lasting relationship with my grandfather, they were together literally until the end, I thought it was funny that my grandmother always bought us candy for her grandchildren, but she would forget so she would give it to us when it was due, later we understood that it was Alzheimer's forming and we didn't know it.

Having a relative with Alzheimer's is very sad and hard, to see how he/she is deteriorating, forgetting everything, forgetting about you, it is very discouraging and to be honest, when you live with someone who has a mental illness, the people around him/her start getting sick too, even so, the family stayed with my grandparents until the end.

The option of placing my grandparents in an institution was considered, but the family decided to take care of them personally with the support of caregivers, here where we live there are not many institutions of that type for the elderly and the ones that exist are not in the best conditions (although I believe that they are currently being improved). I think that as long as we provide care and support to our elderly loved ones, taking care of them personally or leaving them in specialized places are equally valuable options, the important thing is that we do not abandon them.

I appreciate everything I lived with my grandparents, there were very difficult and bitter moments, but also beautiful, I learned too much from them and with them, good and not so good lessons that have served me and I know they will serve me in life, I am grateful for everything, I remember them and I will continue to remember them fondly.
