Thus says the Lord: Hold back your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears; for there is wages for your work, says Jehovah, and they will return from the land of the enemy "
(Jeremiah 31:16).
Esteban had been raised on the mission field. At an early age he professed faith in Christ and had been the means of leading some to the Lord. When he went to the United States to study at the university, he had a good testimony. But then he began to drift, coldness made its appearance and began to get entangled in various sins. Soon he began to take a liking to Eastern religions.
When his parents visited him, they were distraught. They begged and reasoned and pleaded, but he was adamant. Finally they went to the place where he lived with three others. What they saw there completely crushed them. They went home and wept bitterly.
When they went to bed they tried to sleep, but it was useless. Finally at four in the morning they decided to get up and have a quiet time. It was their turn to read Jeremiah 31 that day, but the husband said: "Not Jeremiah!" thinking that the so-called "weeping prophet" would not comfort them. But the Lord prevailed and they opened to Jeremiah 31. When they got to verse 16, they read: “Hold back your voice with weeping, and your eyes with tears; for there is wages for your work, says Jehovah, and they will return from the land of the enemy.
Thousands of Christian parents today are heartbroken, grieving for their wayward sons and daughters. When they pray, the heavens look like iron. They begin to wonder if God will ever restore the fallen.
You must remember that no case is too difficult for the Lord. They are to continue in prayer, watching with thanksgiving. They must plead for the promises of God's Word.
When the mother we were referring to wondered if she had been justified in claiming in prayer what Jeremiah 31:16 said, she read in Isaiah 49:25, "Your case I will defend, and I will save your children."
