In 1880, a German doctor working in Peru received a message that he was needed by a family living in the mountains. The wife of one of the Peruvian Indians was very ill and feared for her life.
Dr. Kart Weiner was taken to the woman's village and there he used all his medical knowledge to save her life. As soon as he stabilized, the doctor set off back to the valley. The grateful husband guided her through the most difficult steps.
When they came to a narrow ledge, the Indian stepped out of the way. Dr. Weiner followed him. They entered an opening in the rock face and when they were on their feet, the doctor looked around in astonishment.
-Where we are? -I ask-. In a silver mine?
"Yes," the Indian replied. In return for saving my wife, take as much money as you can.
The doctor took a large piece of silver ore and, in curiosity, asked:
"Do they know of the existence of this mine in the village?"
"No," the Indian replied. Wealth only brings trouble. I want my people to be happy. You will not be able to find this mine again, so I know that with you my secret is safe.
So far, the mine has never been found. But the doctor's piece of ore is on display in the Natural History Museum in Vienna, Austria.
The Indian was a wise man. It is nice to have enough money to pay the bills, but wealth does not bring happiness. Happiness is an attitude, not a savings account.
