Virus X - lightpainting circuit boards in the dark

in Lightpainters United4 years ago (edited)

Continuing my new current obsession with shooting circuit boards in the kitchen in the dark, this is tonight's efforts. Here I've turned the circuit board out of parallel to create a shallow depth of field. I also called this shot Virus "X" since it took me 10 attempts to get the damned skull lined up without nduging the tripod!!

Some lightpainters refer to this type of lightpainting as "SOOK" as in straight outta the kitchen. This is the first of two test shots required to make the above image where I used a macro extension tube on a 35mm lens to focus on the board:

I lit the board from the front left and rear with red and blue gelled flashguns for consistency of lighting rather than rely on waving a flashlight and getting it "not quite right." Once happy with this element, I switched tripods to focus on a pre-arranged iPad with an image of a skull to line it up inside the chip in the first part.

I focused on the skull and exposed for it briefly then panned the camera at an angle to make a light trail: This is the part that drove me crackers this evening! I kept nudging the tripod making the skull slightly out of focus or camera shook etc.

Once happy with both elements, I set about combining both in to one photographic exposure. The process involves changing lenses in the dark and swapping tripods between each element. The set up for these types of images take far longer than you might imagine!!

About me:
I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in urbex and artistic model photography. I'm always on the lookout for someone to collaborate with; please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to create art.
