Students in Health Sciences need to be cut some slack!! Yes, they'll constantly deal with peoples lives in the future, Yes, any little mistake they make could endanger one’s life but do they need to lose their lives in the process?
My sister's picture triggered this post.
I was busy with my phone today, texting my friends and family members, I decided to look through peoples statuses and I stumbled on my little sister's status and saw her pictures. Tears welled up in my eyes, I was speechless, happy and surprised. I was feeling different emotions at the same time.
Why was I emotional? Did something happen? Yeah, a lot happened.
My sister studied pharmacy for five years and she graduated October last year. While she was still in school, I could barely recognize the girl bearing my surname. Pharmacy school did a number on her, not just her but majority of her course-mates too. What was supposed to be a thing of joy gradually turned into a journey of fear, uncertainty, exhaustion, tears, etc.
My sister had to study tirelessly to avoid resits, repeats and failing out of the department. It was so hard to keep up with the good grades that she was always falling sick because she pushed herself just too hard.
Pharmacy has always been her dream and the last thing on her mind was to shatter that dream.
We were called a few times by her roommates that she was terribly sick. With this sickness came weightloss. She lost so much weight that she was weighing 42kg at some point. I couldn't recognize my little princess anymore, the one who always wore a beautiful smile and you'll never forget to get a glimpse of her gap tooth.
She lost her smile and goofiness and we got an always exhausted and emaciated sister.
Finally, she graduated and all her hard work paid off and she is currently doing her internship . I still can't erase the memories of those days but I am grateful for the point she is currently.
She is glowing gradually, and we can't get enough of her beauty and we pray this change is here to stay.
Prior to my sister joining pharmacy school, I never knew it was so hard for students of health sciences. I knew it was challenging but not enough to render you helpless and you losing yourself to endless studying. As sad as it may seem, some don't even make it at the end of the day.
I know they need to learn a lot because of their position in the society, but this shouldn’t be the reason for these students to be worn out. They are heroes and should be treated as such even before they start practicing.
Whenever I see health practitioners I respect them as it wasn’t a smooth ride but they made it. Lest I forget, these people should be celebrated over and over again.
