Lone Reader

In my first year in school, I lived with three guys as roommates in a very big, spacious house. One of them was the very social type who had many social friends, who also had other friends. So most times, our house was always filled with people—some serious sometimes, and unserious most times. Lol.

They had the habit of reading together, as in group studying with different patterns, and the most common of them was “all-night” reading. My direct friend would always want to force me to join them.

Let me describe the “all-night” reading in case you don’t understand:

*They would choose a venue, either inside the school or a vacant room in one of the friend’s houses. They would go there and read together all through the night in a forceful manner of not allowing anyone to sleep. If anyone slept, others would wake him or her up.*

I was never a fan of a studying partner or having a group study. I prefer the solo study style, especially because I don’t need to spend long hours before I can assimilate. I was—and still am—an easy learner, and during exams, I loved to put my answers in my own pattern except for courses that demanded word-for-word answers in the exam.

But I’ve followed friends to study, I won’t lie about that, especially when it comes to making research for assignments in the library. But I would always leave when I was done with what we went for, rather than stay put and pretend to be reading while I was practically pressing my phone.

I had a friend who was also my roommate during my second year in school. He liked to read a lot—I mean, he loved to spend endless hours with his books—and he would always want me to be like him because, according to him, I looked unserious due to my shallow glance at my books. Honestly, I wanted to adapt to that long-hours style of reading because of him, thinking maybe I could boost my scores with the lengthy hours of study. I joined him, and we started off very well, waking up at midnight and reading till dawn. But hey, I found out I was copying a lifestyle that wasn’t mine. I dislike that a lot! I opted out and only read when I wanted to, not the compulsory type that made me a copycat. The most interesting thing is that, just like I said earlier, I assimilate things easily and do not cram like most of them do.

Thanks for reading.

Group reading is fun. I have tried it a few times but like you said, I also like solo reading because I usually play low R&B music while reading. This habit helped me remember things faster.

I also learned reading as a group back in school. We even had night reading groups, and it was fun.
