The "Serious" Student Myth: Debunking My Reputation

I wasn't the popular student at the university or so I thought, unlike my days in the secondary school when I was known by many for my speed to carry our tasks and my relationship with teachers. I think the popularity was too much on me, it influenced how I wanted to be seen later.

My early days in the university, when I was yet to have any friend, I would go about my activities keeping a straight face and would only smile when I have to ask questions around to find lecture venues or places I needed to be as a new student. I never thought anyone would notice me.

Well, I made friends who grew very close to me in many areas as we attend classes, study and eat together many times until we graduated. Once I get comfortable with people, I can be very jovial and cheerful most of the time so keeping a straight face while going to school then changed.

What I didn't know is, there were people who noticed how I face my business head on without giving a glance to any other along the way. I would get into the lecture room and sit quietly until class begins, I thought it was my own way of making sure I don't fall prey for bad companions.

Long after I made my friends who made friends with more friends, one of their friends made me realize there have been talks about me being a "serious" student and they think I would take first class with my attitude. I burst into laughter because I knew how unserious I am to studying.

I didn't really try to explain to them that they judged wrongly since for a fact, I did kept a straight face but my reaction to what that friend said must have dropped the thought from him at least. My friends who knew me well knows the only time I am serious and it's days to our exams.

When I'm with friends, we would gist all the way from our meetup place to our lecture hall and so, we would laugh a lot especially when we have a mutual thought on something or someone we see along the way. We were like crazy together and quieter and calmer when we're not together.

Another random person also said something about my seriousness with studies because he sees me with one or two books all the time. Some days, he will see me writing lots of notes and his only thought about those scenarios was that, I'll make straight A's in most of my courses.

I never tried to correct that thought but I knew I wasn't actually studying when I'm with the books, I only study seriously a day or two to my exams and I do pretty well in them. Straight A's? Nah, but I didn't have a bad result either. Just really not the "Serious" student they tried to make me to be.

Woow, I love that seriousness expect +been a jovial person,I always wanted to cracks jokes but am telling you my ways of life won't allow me can't even talk much not to talk of being jovial. My Dear keep that up pls

Thank you sis.

Same here when I'm comfortable with people they will see the jovial, friendly and so on side of me. And also I normally read but the time I read the most is when it's close to exam time and I thank God that my results are always good. I'm not a serious type of a person that keep a straight face but people knows me in my department that I only talk to people who are close to me. I can remember when I just enter school and make friends, have heard a lot of how it's good to have a good CGPA in my 100 level so that it will help me alot throughout my remaining years in school. Like I said I normally read but the time I read most is during when our exam time is near, so there was a day I wasn't feeling fine that resulted me to become thin, so my friends noticed it even I was sick through my 100 level first semester exam, so when my results came out my GPA was high than my friends, so they concluded that it was because I wanted to take first class that's why I was thin, but I didn't pay any heed to their word. So I can relate with you also.

Lol they were very funny to think that way but I'm glad you didn't take them too seriously.

Reminds me of how I was labelled a serious student just because I was caught on my laptop till midnight. lol. I was working more than I was studying.

Lol they didn't know the truth. 😅
