Side hustles and part-time jobs were common amongst most students, including me, in those days as a university student. The school I graduated from is a semi-private university, so it was a bit expensive.
Hustling was my second name those days because I knew the family I came from. I was nurtured in a way that even talking to the opposite sex feels like a sin, not to mention collecting a gift from them. It was an extreme kind of nurturing that instilled a lot of fear in me as a growing-up girl child trying to explore life, but no, the restriction was much until I started to break out gradually and still hold most of our family values.
That's, by the way, the point I am trying to make is that my kind of upbringing made me hustle like a man while in school, because I was never given enough money to see me through school demands. My parents didn't have all the resources to give me that kind of life they craved; however, I hustled to create a good life for myself while studying back-to-back in the process. I remember mentioning selling dental materials to my fellow classmates during our practicals. It didn't end there, but this side hustle was a thoughtful one and the major one, amongst others, I tried out.
I succeeded in it a lot, as most of my mates would always come around to buy dental materials for their compulsory practicals, especially at the affordable rates I sold for a quick turnover.
Aside from that, some of my classmates who came from well-to-do families were expressing laziness in attending lectures and making notes, so they would always come to me asking that I assist them in copying the notes. Of course it was an opportunity to earn more. I gave them my price, and they accepted, so any break period I am not reading in the school library; I am in the class copying their notes. My school was strict to the point that some lecturers marked notes; otherwise, they would have photocopied it without having me copy the notes for them, but then, it was for my advantage, and I made decent money from them while it lasted.
Again, the rate of impromptu quizzes in my school then was alarming, so I bought sheets of papers in a large quantity and kept them handy in case of a quiz. You can imagine how I would be crowded, everyone struggling to get theirs for the quiz each time. In fact, students from other departments were visiting my class just to buy sheets for their test. While some saw the business as a stressful one, I was making my neat money codedly.
These were the side hustles I did right there inside my school without having to leave school for a part-time job, just using the opportunity available to create profit for myself. I bet it was a creative idea that helped my finances back then in school.
The experiences taught me that sometimes, all I need to know is to create a solution to a problem within my environment and learn from it. Again, I didn't allow my parents' financial incapability to limit the good life I was supposed to live while in school but helped myself with these side hustles. The profits were a lifesaver, I must say.
