Pleasant greetings my wonderful students of the #hivestudentconnect community. I truly understand better now, you know most things are truly understood when they are experienced. I can still vividly remember back in my JSS2 I was still a bit naïve, so I had this neighbor that was a university student, she do come home most weekends and her parents would give her lots of foodstuffs to take back to school, but she still had a side hustle where she sold thrift clothes
One day I asked her why she still had to be doing a side hustle when her parents have been providing her with foodstuffs almost every weekends and she smiled and replied “you would not really understand now till you get there you will understand better” I never really understood what she meant sha.
So immediately I was done writing my SSCE I told my dad that I want to start working probably as a sales girl in one boutique while waiting to gain admission to the university so I could also save up money for myself. My father did not let me complete my sentence he said “NO! you can’t do that now so you won’t grow to love money” I guess he thought when I start earning I would lose interest in furthering my studies, at that point all I had to do was to simply obey.
When I finally gained admission to the university to Study medicine and surgery I was so glad but little did I know that university is never like secondary school, after my first semester no one told me I needed to work, I had to personally look for a side hustle one that would not take me so far away from studies as medicine is so demanding.
In my second semester I realized that there were lots of things to buy, I needed to buy all the textbooks and practical manuals, do assignments, research, and make some printouts, I would have to pay up some bills, I would have to make my hair and many other things. All these I needed to do without having to call my parent all the time to send me money for every single thing.
Offcourse I have younger siblings and they needed to be cared for as well, it was then I could remember and finally understood what my neighbor told me when I was in JSS2.
So I had this friend who has been pressuring me to join hive, at first I was not consistent and I felt so discouraged whenever I make posts just to see 0.00 with no votes at all. Honestly, I was discouraged and I stopped, I was scrolling through hive one day and I realized that it was not just about writing with the aim of having money to pay your bills, it was about passion and consistency.
So I finally got to be active on hive and it has been my side hustle since then and now. Hive has helped me pay a lot of bills in school and not just that with hive I was able to pay my school fees for the last session that just ended. And with hive I have been able to pay up for a 6month skills training, my Dad who was once against me taking up a side hustle was now proud of me.
My dear students, side hustle helps a lot, you don’t have to go too far but just writing can be all you need, being a middle man in a business is also a side hustle, learning a skill and utilizing is also worth doing. Don’t spend all those years within the four walls of the university without learning and growing skills that will help you after school.
