Hello my dear friends from Hive, today I want to start telling you about one of the sculptures in my Havana known as “Monumento a las Victimas del Maine”. This is located very close to the Havana boardwalk and to the west of the majestic Hotel Nacional de Cuba.

El Monumento a las Victimas del Maine fue construido en honor a los marineros que murieron en la misteriosa explosión del acorazado barco de guerra USS Maine, el cual explotó en la Bahía de La Habana en 1898, sirviendo como excusa a los Estados Unidos para declarar la guerra a España y apoderarse de sus colonias. Esta obra la presentó y llevó a cabo el arquitecto Félix Cabarrocas en colaboración con su amigo Moisés Huerta siendo inaugurada el 8 de marzo de 1925.
The Monument to the Victims of Maine was built in honor of the sailors who died in the mysterious explosion of the battleship USS Maine, which exploded in Havana Bay in 1898, serving as an excuse for the United States to declare the war on Spain and seize its colonies. This work was presented and carried out by the architect Félix Cabarrocas in collaboration with his friend Moisés Huerta, being inaugurated on March 8, 1925.
Ahora les contare un poco sobre su arquitectura…en el centro se alzan dos columnas gigantes, a ambos lados se colocaron sendos cañones y las cadenas del ancla del USS Maine. Sobre sus columnas se encontraba la estatua del águila calva de bronce con alas estiradas (símbolo de los Estados Unidos). El monumento fue modificado tras el triunfo de la Revolución a mano de Fidel Castro en 1961 y lo primero fue retirar el águila. Sobre un gran pedestal debajo de las columnas hay dos figuras que son alegorías de Cuba y Estados Unidos en la parte interior .En la parte que mira al malecón se muestra una figura que sujeta a otras dos amparando a representantes de dicho naufragio. Tiene además insertadas distintas inscripciones; algunas se han desaparecido y otra transformadas con las renovaciones.
Now I will tell you a little about its architecture… in the center there are two giant columns, on both sides two cannons and the anchor chains of the USS Maine were placed. On its columns was the statue of the bronze bald eagle with outstretched wings (symbol of the United States). The monument was modified after the triumph of the Revolution at the hands of Fidel Castro in 1961 and the first thing was to remove the eagle. On a large pedestal under the columns there are two figures that are allegories of Cuba and the United States in the interior. In the part that looks at the boardwalk, a figure is shown holding two others protecting representatives of said shipwreck. It also has different inscriptions inserted; some have disappeared and another transformed with the renovations.
Todo habanero que se sienta en el malecón habanero puede observar la grandeza de esta escultura incluso pasear por sus alrededores y hasta sentarse a tener una charla. Espero que con esto que les he contado se adentren un poquito más en mi cultura, al igual que lo estoy haciendo yo.
