Hace pocos días observé a unos niños, entre ellos hijos de algunos de mis vecinos, que cargaban una gran cantidad de basura, entre los desechos había partes oxidadas de lavadoras, neveras y escombros. Sospeché que botarían todo aquello cerca, así que les pregunté sobre el destino de aquel cargamento. Me respondieron que sería lanzado a la quebrada porque era más fácil que llevarlo hasta un basurero. Les advertí a esos niños que no era correcto y si lo hacían hablaría con sus padres. De inmediato recibí una sarta de ofensas y groserías.
De regreso, y cuando vi que habían lanzado toda la basura a la quebrada, pasé por las casas de aquellos muchachos, toqué la puerta en varias ocasiones, pero no obtuve respuesta. Sin embargo, avisté a dos vecinas que se asomaron al sentir mi llamado, les comenté sobre lo sucedido y una de ellas me indicó que perdería mi tiempo intentando cambiar el pensamiento de esa gente. Continúe hasta mi casa, allí conversé con mis tías sobre lo sucedido y no se sorprendieron, por cuanto así vive mucha gente en nuestra comunidad.
A few days ago I observed some children, among them the children of some of my neighbors, who were carrying a large amount of garbage, among the waste there were rusty parts of washing machines, refrigerators and debris. I suspected they would dump everything nearby, so I asked them about the destination of that shipment. They replied that it would be thrown into the ravine because it was easier than taking it to a garbage dump. I warned those children that it was wrong and if they did I would talk to their parents. I immediately received a string of insults and rudeness.
On the way back, and when I saw that they had thrown all the garbage into the creek, I passed by the houses of those boys, I knocked on the door several times, but I did not get a response. However, I saw two neighbors who appeared when they felt my call, I told them about what happened and one of them told me that I would waste my time trying to change the thinking of those people. I continued to my house, there I talked with my aunts about what happened and they were not surprised, because that is how many people live in our community.

Ese mismo día en la tarde se desató un aguacero que duró alrededor de una hora, el caudal hizo que la quebrada se desbordara y toda la basura acumulada se dispersara violentamente por las calles. Cuando aminoró la lluvia y el caudal bajó su intensidad, salí a ver si alguien requería mi ayuda. Observé entonces una escena que llamó a la reflexión. Los restos de lavadoras y neveras, entre otros cachivaches, además de mucha basura, quedaron incrustados en el frente de las casas donde vivían aquellos chicos que temprano habían lanzado esos desperdicios a la quebrada. Les indiqué a las vecinas que hablaron conmigo que esa era la consecuencia de la irresponsabilidad y la flojera. Me dieron la razón.
Quise compartir con ustedes esta anécdota ya que me llevó a reflexionar sobre la convivencia vecinal. Somos seres gregarios y, por tanto, nos relacionamos de forma permanente con otras personas. Esta comunicación debería estar fundamentada en el respeto, la tolerancia y en el afecto, sin embargo, no siempre resulta así, puesto que las diferencias de pensamiento, la capacidad de análisis y el nivel de conciencia no es igual en todos los seres humanos. Estos elementos se ven condicionados por el esquema de valores impartido en cada hogar y por el estatus académico.
That same day in the afternoon a downpour that lasted about an hour broke out, the flow caused the stream to overflow and all the accumulated garbage was violently dispersed through the streets. When the rain lessened and the flow decreased in intensity, I went out to see if anyone needed my help. I then observed a scene that called for reflection. The remains of washing machines and refrigerators, among other trinkets, in addition to a lot of garbage, were embedded in the front of the houses where those boys lived who had thrown that waste into the creek early on. I pointed out to the neighbors who spoke to me that this was the consequence of irresponsibility and laziness. They gave me the reason.
I wanted to share this anecdote with you as it led me to reflect on neighborhood coexistence. We are gregarious beings and, therefore, we interact permanently with other people. This communication should be based on respect, tolerance and affection, however, this is not always the case, since the differences in thought, the capacity for analysis and the level of consciousness are not the same in all human beings. These elements are conditioned by the values scheme taught in each home and by academic status.

En nuestra comunidad debemos interactuar a diario con múltiples individuos que poseen personalidades disímiles, algunos con gran capacidad de escucha, otros, por el contrario, intransigentes. Lo verdaderamente importante es propiciar el diálogo para lograr el entendimiento y poder ser empáticos, de otro modo la convivencia no será en los mejores términos. De allí que los valores enseñados en casa deban estar acordes con las normas sociales. Vivir en un ambiente agradable debe ser la meta.
Por supuesto, una de las grandes ventajas de hacer vida en comunidad es que los diferentes problemas que pudieran surgir se solucionan total o parcialmente con la ayuda de todos, buscando no perjudicar a nadie o con el mínimo de daños posibles. La convivencia es trascendental porque permite visualizar lo que somos a partir de la existencia de los demás, respetando los límites, cumpliendo nuestros deberes y haciendo valer los derechos. En definitiva, las relaciones favorables con los otros nos ayudan a tener estabilidad y seguridad en un determinado lugar, así como marcan un hito benéfico para el desarrollo y supervivencia de las sociedades.
In our community we must interact daily with multiple individuals who have dissimilar personalities, some with great listening skills, others, on the contrary, intransigent. The really important thing is to promote dialogue to achieve understanding and be able to be empathetic, otherwise the coexistence will not be in the best terms. Hence, the values taught at home must be in accordance with social norms. Living in a pleasant environment should be the goal.
Of course, one of the great advantages of living in community is that the different problems that may arise are totally or partially solved with the help of everyone, seeking not to harm anyone or with the minimum possible damage. Coexistence is transcendental because it allows us to visualize what we are from the existence of others, respecting limits, fulfilling our duties and asserting rights. In short, favorable relationships with others help us to have stability and security in a certain place, as well as mark a beneficial milestone for the development and survival of societies.

Es una reflexión muy buena, me recuerda muchísimo cuando se presentan las fuertes lluvias en mi pueblo y las alcantarillas se tapan gracias a la basura que lanza la gente para luego verlos llorar pensando que es el fin del mundo porque el agua les llega por la rodilla.

A mí, me ha hecho reflexionar sobre el poder de las acciones de la gente. Uno a veces quisiera instar a que el pensamiento de la gente sea mejor, pero es muy difícil. Hace poco participé en una Iniciativa sobre la Madre Tierra, que por cierto, todavía está abierta.
Ojalá nuestro mundo, cada día sea mejor o por lo menos, con más educación. Aunque no podamos cambiarlo completamente, podemos tener acciones, un granito de arena.

Hello @ramisey. I read once that you can't get others to think the same way you do by shouting and screaming at them. They tune you out and won't listen. You are correct that different groups of people have different perspectives according to their social norms.
