Brother Ali's first album dropped in 2000. A year or 2 before that, I met him at an open mic session in Uptown Minneapolis at FIFTH ELEMENT ROCORD SHOP, where he recited a 10-15 minute poem off of memory. It was a deep emotional story about the adversity he had been through as a child. I was impressed.
