ISSUE OF INHERITANCE.

in Hive Naija4 days ago

Good evening and Welcome to my blog.

Inheritance are the properties left behind by a dead person. Meaning when I die in my old age of course, whatever properties I may have in my name becomes that of my children and younger siblings.

In my culture as a Yoruba, such properties are expected to be inherited or taken over by family members who are younger in age compared to the one who died. As such, inheritance is supposed to be shared among the wife, children and younger siblings of a dead person.

In some cases, such properties can be passed to the next male child in the extended family if the dead person does not have any male child of his own and the reason for this is that wealth does not leave the family, in other to retain the family’s influence or so the family name does not go into extinction.

In some cultures, it is believed that such properties be shared among the kinsmen of the dead person, leaving his wife and children with little or nothing or at the mercy of their uncles and aunts. A lot of things can be inherited, this depends on how rich or wealthy the demise is. Some of the things that could be inherited are gold, money, land, house, farm and even businesses.

I have read about quite a number of heroes and heroines who inherited their parents' businesses after their death. Such people are Efunsetan Aniwura of Egba land, Late Madam Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo, Alinko Dangote, Owo Ogunde Femi Adebayo of Nollywood to mention a few.

Some old cultures do not support the idea of sharing or giving any inheritance to women or female children while some cultures would even inherit a woman as an inheritance. Here is how that is possible. If a man dies and leaves a beautiful young wife behind, such a woman can be passed to another man in the family as an inherited wife. Here is my question, are women a piece of furniture?

I do not really know what the teachings of the bible is about inheritance but Islam teaches us that when a man dies and leaves some properties behind, all his debts must be paid then the properties he left behind should be shared among his children. While at that, the teachings state that a man should take a hundred percent share while a woman is expected to take fifty percent of what a male child takes.

Why this now? I read about inheritance in an old book and cannot help but wonder and thank God my children were not given birth to in olden days and also thank god for civilization and education which makes us to be well informed about will and estate management should incase one dies.I am just thinking out loud, not dying anytime soon. @beckyroyal @fashtioluwa @justfavour tell us what you learnt about properties and inheritance in olden days and according to your belief.

Thank you for reading, I am @ellizy.
