Desiring Change

in Hive Naija22 days ago

I've been living the same neighborhood since I was born twenty years ago. Yeah, it's the consistency for me. Not so much has changed since then, I see see the same old building, maybe few renovated ones, same old schools, same old businesses(although few of the local business has been closed down), same old people. My neighborhood is is like a close-knit community, everybody knows everybody. There isn't quite so much neighbors we have, just a few people and their respective families living together and coexisting.

One of the thing I miss back then was how bubbly it used to be in my area. Men in their usual viewing spot near my house, always cheering the ballers each time it's game day, women getting together and cooking up premium gists, the shouts of children always filled the air. When I was younger, there used to be many kids I played with, a lot of them. Now the kids, have grown into adults and found their way into life. Some social centers are no longer functioning and the neighborhood have gotten a lot quieter, boring most times.

We didn't have so much infrastructural developments back then and we still haven't gotten them now. Our roads are still as bad as before, well maybe worse, we're still hoping and praying that the government will at try and fix up the roads so we don't have to stress so much going about our businesses each day. The power supply over here has gotten worse recently, back then we had power supply every days, now we have to wait a week or two before you can get the little one they manage to provide for few hours.

One of the things I'm thankful for is how my neighborhood have gotten more peaceful over. There used to be a time when everyone used to be on their toes because rebellious teens who grew bad and became a menace to the entire neighborhood. More still, some bad neighbors who were always creating issues. I'm talking about the ones that will always knock people's heads together, best at creating misunderstandings and fights.

I remember we used to have one neighbor back then, a married woman living with her 5 kids. Her husband wasn't always home, so basically we can say she raised those kids. She was living with her kids at the house next to ours, she rented some rooms as did other tenants. She was just the real definition of trouble. Nothing anyone does seems good for her. It's very common to wake up to her loud voice quarreling and exchanging words with other tenants. Most times, the fight originated from her rude and ill-mannered kids, who took after their mother in making trouble in the neighborhood.

One of the things we had to tolerate from her is the way she disposes her waste. Whenever she did her laundry or did some other washing, she always dispose her water at the entrance of my compound. It was very irritating for us to keep up with that constant behaviour because most times, the dirty water always came with waste food particles from her kitchen. I'm talking about grains of cooked rice lying around after they disposed the water they used for washing dishes, the worst of it all is they don't sweep it out and dispose them correctly. It was a regular thing to head home and see the mess that have been created just at the entrance of your compound.

My Dad pleaded with her severally to stop disposing her dirty water in such a way that offends other people around. She wouldn't listen, she even gets offended that my dad tells her to sweep out the mess she creates. Most of the times, when we ask her kids to sweep out those things, they either ignore you or run their mouth at you. This problem got so big that it almost created a big issue between us and the owner of the house where she lived because he always took her side after hearing the much lies and twisted stories she always made up.

At last we decided not to make more issues out of it, we just let them be just for the peace neighborhood. We would be the ones to sweep out any mess they make at the entrance of our compound. It was just last month, she got into bad side with the house owner and she was served eviction notice. She moved out of my neighborhood and at last we finally got some peace back. No more trouble making neighbors, we were just relieved.

We've had some new faces recently, they seem nice and cool. I hope they continue to be so, and I hope we get see the much needed infrastructural developments like improved roads and electricity.
