THE PLACE OF ANNUAL EVENTS IN FOSTERING UNITY, PEACE AND LOVE ♥️🇳🇬

Annual events are activities or occasions occuring once in a year. This can come in the form of a celebration, a festive/festival, a tradition, an occasion, an annual ritual and so on. These annual events can be seen in a family either nuclear or extended or in a town as indigenes or lovers of such annual events. In Nigeria and in African countries, annual events has been for a very long time as it relates to cultural celebrations (e.g. Osun-Osogbo festival, Argungu fishing festival), family/town uniqueness (e.g. identical twins celebration in Igboora in Oyo State of Nigeria, annual town days like Osogbo Day in Osun State), historic commemorations (e.g. war victories like Kiriji war celebration).

Family traditions or annual events which i do partake of is that of annual Christian festives (been a Christian by faith) which includes Christmas and Easter celebrations majorly. I remembered how this used to be what we always long for as our extended families do come around with their children to our home for these celebrations. Also, wedding anniversaries and birthday celebrations are also key annual family events we celebrate. In addition, annual extended family meeting at our hometown or at a designated place as observed in some families aswell.

In my hometown here in Nigeria, the annual town day is celebrated as organised by the sons and daughters of the town where indigenes, non-indigenes, dignitaries from all works of life comes to celebrate this day. Royal blessing is received from the traditional ruler of my town and is such a beautiful annual gathering. In some towns, the rich cultural heritage they have is celebrated annually e.g. The Ojude Oba festival, the Osun-Osogbo festival, the hunter's day, twins celebration in Igboora in Oyo State as mentioned above and many other similar festivals.

Also, i admire the Argungu fishing festival in Kebbi State is a beautiful display of an annual town festival. In another clime, the "Zulu festival of virginity" in South Africa is also an annual celebration of young girls who are not yet married for their chaste/model lifestyle. The "Eyo" festival in Lagos, the "new yam"festival of every first week of September by the Igede people of Benue State, the masquerade festivals in some towns as celebrated are annual rituals been observed.

Family traditions and annual rituals helps to foster unity and peaceful coexistence in families and towns hereby strengthening the bond of love. For example, wedding anniversary strengthens love and helps to appreciate the value and worth of marriage.
Also, annual events brings to limelight the values of our rich cultural heritage aswell progress and development. Through this, we showcase our rich culture to the world bringing in tourists and investors thereby investing in such and gaining global recognition.

However, any family tradition or annual event that brings about wastes through extravagance or involves killings through rituals should be discouraged. Family traditions or annual events that breeds corruption, gender violation or contempt should be discouraged. We have seen cases where lack of discretion and poor planning has affected the turn out of some of these annual events. Once abuse has sets in through digression from the original purpose/intent of such family tradition or annual ritual, it should be stopped or retraced.

Nigeria is so diverse in culture and colour that it warms the heart of those who experience it. I have only experiences a few of these festivals and I can say that the vibrancy of our ethnicity and tribes make us stand out.
