Every December, something changes.
The air feels different. Roads get busier. Villages come alive again. Clothes are sewn, bags are packed, and somehow no matter how tough the year has been and we still find reasons to smile.
That’s Christmas.
But before it became a season of travel, food, and endless “Merry Christmas” messages, it began as a simple story.
Over 2,000 years ago, Christians believe Jesus Christ was born not in comfort or royalty, but in a manger. No announcement, or rather with a symbolic angelic announcement. No celebration. Just a quiet arrival that would later shape the lives of billions.
That detail always gets me.
The most celebrated birth in history began in the most ordinary way.
🌍 How Christmas Traveled to Us
Christmas didn’t arrive in Nigeria the way we know it today. It journeyed through cultures, languages, and generations. Along the way, people added their own colours, sounds, and meanings.
Here, Christmas became more than a religious event. It became a homecoming.
It’s when cities release their people back to their roots. When neighbours knock freely. When churches overflow with songs, dance, and gratitude. When even those with little still find a way to share something.
🇳🇬 The Nigerian Christmas Spirit
In Nigeria, Christmas is loud and warm and emotional.
It’s parents cooking from morning till night.
It’s children counting days with excitement.
It’s relatives asking uncomfortable questions and still hugging you after 😄
But beneath all that is something powerful:
connection.
We remember who we are.
We remember where we’re from.
We remember each other.
🕯️ Why It Still Matters
In a world full of stress, division, and uncertainty, Christmas quietly reminds us that:
kindness still matters
hope is not foolish
love doesn’t need perfection to exist
Even if you don’t celebrate Christmas religiously, its message love, generosity, and light.
What does Christmas mean to you?
Is it faith? Family? Food?
Do you have a memory that defines Christmas for you good or bad?.
For me it is the love shared with family and the food
