Telling the truth, simply because it's obviously the truth without considering how the other person might feel about hearing it is something I don't support. We shouldn't ignore how an information affects a person because we just want to be brutally honest. Being honest should be accompanied by empathy and wisdom, the truth can be communicated gently and at the appropriate time.
Inasmuch as silence is an option or a good approach in most cases, when important things are being affected, like the health, safety, finance and family of a person are involved, they really deserve to know. We should always choose kindness when telling the truth.
