RE: Reilly, Ace of Spies: An Intriguing Blend of Myth and History

This sounds interesting and right up my street. I much prefer British drama series to big-budget, fast-paced American productions. I suppose I relate more to the dry wit and subtle British humour, and I find that the shorter seasons of British productions lend themselves to more concise and nuanced storytelling. Great review!

It is low key. Even the music (Shostakovic) is low key. Sam Neill is wonderful, although so young when he made this. They had to age him (little color in his hair) as the show progressed through history.

Since watching I've looked up the book by Lockhart, on which it is based. That wasn't too interesting. Once you've watched the show you are kind of repeating what's shown there. However, another book by Abbot, The Empire of Russia, is wonderful. It's out of copyright so I'm able to get it as a Librivox audio book on YouTube. Abbot offers so many details about figures in Russian history such as Ivan IV and Peter the Great. It's like researched gossip. How much is accurate? Who can tell after centuries have passed. At least, though, the man did his research and has quoted responsible sources.

Obviously, I found the show to be extremely interesting. The audio book is great for listening when I'm doing something else or when I'm trying to go to sleep.

Great review!

Thank you✨
