I will be writing more on this. So far it has been hard - for personal reasons.
I will try to stay impartial as hard as it is. I grew up in Southern Russia, within 100 km of the Ukrane's Eastern border. My father's branch of the family comes from Ukraine. I have friends and relatives in Ukraine and Russia. It is personal.
I believe this war is an attempt on the part of the ruling regime in Russia to rebuild the Russian Empire. At this point, the Ukraine is fighting a war for its survival. That simple.
And that makes it all the more painful to read news like this. Following indiscriminate shelling of civilian areas by the Russian artillery corps the Ukrainian Special Operations Command effectively stated that these Russian soldiers will no longer be taken prisoner alive. That is emotionally understandable - but wrong. It is likely wrong from the tactical perspective as that encourages Russian soldiers not to surrender but rather to fight. It is also wrong because this is a purely collectivist, punitive initiative - and when one fights a dragon, one must be careful not to become a dragon oneself.

I also believe the goal is to rebuild the Russian Empire, at least to the days of the USSR...
And I also think that the damage Russia has already done, even if they pull out now, will take decades to repair..
And I do not think that Russia will ever stop, no matter who is running the show, and I do understand why - in a word "arrogance".
So I think that realistically the only thing the world at large can do is cripple the ruble to the point of no return - ever.
Sad but...
I do not believe there is a such thing as one man that can go over the will of millions of people, so..
They get help - from the people, always...

I am not quite as pessimistic I guess. The percentage - and influence - of the part of the Russian society afflicted with this sort of influence needs to decrease, that is all. I don't see why this can not be done.

The Russian Empire is a dream anyway. Russia has the fear coming from WWII, the Nazi invasion. I think we should see the big picture. How right being a tool of the USA, the EU and NATO for Zelenskyy, for Ukranie? A country should have not let West involve in internal affairs. I wrote a post this war, you can read it if you want.
