Emotions: Tendencies and Effects on Decision Making

in SciFi Multiverse2 months ago

One thing that basically differs a human being from a robot is emotion. These emotions make for the human nature that we possess. While the robot has the tendency to do and undo like a human, the emotional aspects of our science sets us apart and I'll say, higher. It's in this components of the complex human nature that we relate to situations from within and then without. As human beings, we are one way or another products of our emotions.

Emotions are intricate elements of our nature, and our operations in life can be a lot, highly influenced by them. The various toxins within, running through our system can be—and mostly are—the major actors behind the scenes, propelling our actions and inactions. They make us desire to do or not do a thing, say or not say a thing, go or not go somewhere. All a testament to their constant influence on our lives as humans, bearing this flesh and blood and every system within.

With all the intricacies and necessity, the emotions we bear can be a huge disadvantage or disaster to us. From missing out of opportunities, to getting one in trouble, and other much adverse effects, it's an undeniable fact that keen interest should be paid to it for these effects that could arise as a result sometimes. People have taken decisions and got held bound in situations due to emotions. I've found myself on the receiving end of such emotional influence as well.

One of such was when growing up. I had a good and tight friend we always played together. Even in the plays, we ensured we would be on same side. An affront to that could cause me not to play, or totally not enjoy the play even if I did. On this day though, he said something to my younger brother—I guess he put his hands on him too. I wasn't willing to be reasonable enough when I found out; well, maybe my emotions were not willing to let be.

In a slight moment, we were exchanging words and it led to a fight. I felt bad fighting him after the incidence. Much more regret for me was when his mom came back and gave him a beating. She was disappointed in us fighting each other; much more in him hence, the beating. Since then, I wouldn't allow emotions affect my friendship with him. Ultimately, that and many other occurrences in life made me understand to always put emotions in check, and never act by them or let them rule. I knew better to always see beyond the emotions.

These emotional drives don't only come from the "negative" perceived side of emotions. They spring from the "positive" ones as well. I could remember recently volunteering to be part of a certain work. We were in good numbers; different sets of people of the same and different fields all put together. I was given a task to design some flyers which I did. After some time, I was given another to carry out. I wasn't supposed to do another this soon. However, due to the emotional pleasing state I was, I agreed to do it, though the duration was short.

It was a work I would later get pissed off by. Several corrections and adjustments kept coming in that I could only wonder why I took it even. It was all in a moment; I was so happy and I didn't think before giving the yes. I got to realise that saying no wouldn't have been an issue. Others were on ground to replace me. It taught me the lesson to be even more careful where my "positive" emotions might be leading my decisions and actions, beyond the "negative" ones.

This is my entry for the SciFi Multiverse weekly prompt, week 7.
