Liotes Hive Witness Ready For HardFork! .:. Node Upgraded to 1.28.3 Version

in Hive Governance β€’ last month

As we suck at posting updates regarding our Liotes witness node, I will use the same post for multiple announcements to cover as many things as possible... πŸ™‚ The most important thing is that our node is updated to the latest version, and it's ready for the upcoming hardfork of the Hive blockchain!

We were delaying this update for multiple reasons... We had an idea to rebuild the whole node, but we were waiting to get the best possible machine out there, for a fair price... I know that some of you think that Black Friday offers are a scam (and I agree that sometimes they are), but we did get a nice offer on the current machine 2 years ago! It worked flawlessly and we are proud that we had 0 missed blocked... Until today!! 😱 But more about that later... (it wasn't a hardware fault!) Anyway, as the hardfork will come sooner, we had to make a move faster, so the new machine will wait for some more time...

The second reason for delaying was that our version of the software hadn't been updated for months... As we aren't skilled coders, we had to wait for the guy who maintains the specific script to make an update... Of course, that's not a sustainable way to do the "Hive witnessing" as we should upgrade to the new version as soon as possible, to avoid possible issues, and incompatibilities... Because of that, we have decided to change the script, and instead of doing the HIAB (Hive-In-A-Box) solution, we went with the Docker version created by @mahdiyari!

Another reason to change the script was that we needed to switch to another method of storing the blockchain... While some were joking in the Liotes discord on our account, the process of syncing the chain isn't as fast as you would think... But great progress has been made regarding that... In the past, it would take between 3-4 days (for our machine, it was like that), and today, it took a bit more than 16 hours (my first assumption was that it would take over 24 hours)!

If you are thinking about running a Hive witness node, but you are afraid that you aren't skilled enough to do it, don't worry anymore! The script and the setup process are straightforward, and almost anyone can complete them! A very easy tutorial is available here.

Speaking of which... If you don't want to miss blocks, remember to restart the script after updating your configuration file! Someone did that (me πŸ˜ƒ), and now we have that ugly number 1 in the column of missed blocks! It's not a big deal, but it was nice to brag about having 0 after running a node for almost 2 years! πŸ˜€

The biggest advantage of this solution is that the future hived updates should be easy to perform... A few clicks and voila! Also, I would like to thank @mahdiyari for his prompt support when I noticed the missed block... He replied within minutes and helped me identify my mistake!

That would be all for this short update! Fingers crossed that the upcoming hardfork passes well, and don't hesitate to run your Hive witness node! As it's very simple to do, there are no valid excuses not to do it!

Thanks for supporting Liotes Hive Witness!

So now we can point fingers for 2 years .... 😜😜

but nice job done , I'm still thinking of setting up my own witness just for the fun of it, i do have the hardware ready, just laking motivation, and everytime i think let's do it something else pops up .

Congratulations !!

Check out the link that I shared in the post... setting up a node became very easy... You don't need that much time as you think... ;)
I mean, sync does take time, but you don't have to do anything while it's running... πŸ˜ƒ

was already playing with it on a spare server / pc got an error message while getting 1.28.3 acces denied . will try again after i brought the wife the work :)

it seems that i'm a witness at the moment ...

Congratulations! πŸ₯‚

thx , although portainer shows that the witness is still starting ...

looks like it's still syncing : ] Syncing Blockchain --- Got block: #23510000 time: 2018-06-21T07:25:03 producer: smooth.witness --- 840.00Β΅s/block, avg. size 10892, avg. tx count 40

Hehehee... and you were joking about our 16 hours of syncing... 😜

true , will see how long this is going to take in the end .

Thanks for getting ready and sharing out this update!

You are welcome! It took some time, but it's up... :)

Good job! I'm interested in running something on Raspberry Pi, I watch the HiveFest presentation :)

Oh, yes... I saw the presentation! It looks amazing!

It's nice to see that you are getting that witness ready. I almost didn't realize that another hard fork was happening. Mistakes happen, and it sucks to miss a block. At least you know what to do next time.

Yeah, exactly! And sharing the mistake will spare someone else a lot of hassle... πŸ˜ƒ

I have no idea what you just said in all that tech jargon but it sounds like TLDR: Good News. :)

Hahahaha... Well, I'm not that techy at all... And I thought this was an "easy jargon" πŸ˜€

Congrats on setting up Hive node machine from scratch. And improvement in image restore time is huge. Is it image restore or full transaction log sync?

Can you disclose the server specs? tnx

It was a full log sync...

And the machine specs are:

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1270v6
Memory: 32 GB DDR4
Storage: 2x450 GB SSD NVMe

OVH

What is PaulCloudHost? πŸ˜ƒ

No idea. Perplexity spitted it out when I asked it to search for hosting with such parameters as is your server. Let me try it again ... copied in parallel reply. I see that OVH is in the table too :)

For server hosting with the selected specs (as shared in your referenced Hive post), here’s a summary of common offerings matching your needs based on current providers:

Desired specs:

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1270v6

Memory: 32 GB DDR4

Storage: 2x450 GB SSD NVMe

Yay all the best!

Thanks! It went well! πŸ˜ƒ

You guys will continue having my witness vote regardless! πŸ‘

Thanks for your support! We appreciate it! πŸ™

The tech guys sounded quite optimistic about the hardfork at Hive Fest 10 ...
I also learnt that it's now much cheaper to run a node than it used to be.
However, I'm still not too keen on the idea of actually running a node! Good luck with yours!

A lot of things have changed in the last 2 years that we have been running our node... It's a lot simpler to run it and also cheaper, as you said...
Those are good moves that help in decentralization the chain!

Speaking of nodes, this post by @thebeedevs may be of interest!

That looks great, and maybe I will try it once... I had Raspberry in the past that I used for rebooting mining rigs, but have no idea where it is... lol.. πŸ˜‚

Great.
