You can blame @nicklewis for this, but I have been getting into the world of electronic music lately. You can see my other post about the M-Vave FM1 synthesizer. I have some other devices and was wondering how to connect everything together. The standard for this is MIDI that can go over an old style 5-pin cable, but these days can be over USB or Bluetooth. The FM1 supports all of those. It gets complex if you have one controller operating multiple devices and are not using a computer. There are specialist devices for this, but they can be expensive. I managed to find RaspiMIDIHub. I had a Raspberry Pi in a box so I just had to put the system on an SD card and boot it up.
My Akai MPK and the Korg NanoKontrol are powered by the Pi and I wondered if it could handle that, but it worked. The Pi acts as a Wifi access point that you can log into from any device and then you do everything from a web page. You have the patch panel to set the connections. There are various virtual controllers. I configured one to turn the FM1 effects on and off. Then there are playing plugins such as an arpeggiator and a tracker. There are others that I do not understand yet, but the manual has details.
The FM1 is running the Baud Girl firmware so I needed to read the manual for that to understand what MIDI codes it expects.
You could build a whole performance system around this, but I am just playing for now. This software is free and looks really good.
Rpi now days have become expensive, remember when I bought my first two to run Kodi, surprising if there is no lag between devices, have always love to thinker with this devices trying to get as much from low tech ✌️
This is a Pi 3 that I've had for years. I don't have anything newer, but the memory prices are crazy.
The MIDI data rate is not that high so it should be fast enough. There are all sorts of options to route the data around with filters and mappings.
This synthesiser is really interesting. I’ve been wanting a Boss VE-22 pedalboard it’s a vocal effects pedal that would definitely be a huge help in my guitar performances but I’ve found it a bit difficult to save up for it. I hope a miracle happens this year or next, ha ha ha
There are so many cool gadgets around these days. I'm actually surprised that one doesn't do MIDI as some effects units can use it. I've got some guitar effects, but have been playing other instruments lately. I hope you can get one some time.
As my grandmother says, ‘Amen to what you say’ 😄
Must be satisfying to build something yourself that makes the whole setup easier to use ;)
Well I didn't really build it, but some people will find it useful.
