Behind the name of the mythical German aviator hides the greatest rock band that our country has ever given. True legends of the genre, anyone who has followed heavy metal in the last 20 years will know that Baron Rojo is our most international band, a group that crossed borders and achieved a status that no other band born in the peninsula has managed to repeat since then. Spanish bands seem eternally condemned to live tied to the national market with slight incursions in Latin American territory and in some European countries, however Baron was a combo known in any country and in fact even today is the first reference of any foreigner when you ask if they know any Spanish band.
Tras el nombre del mitico aviador alemán se esconde el grupo de rock mas grande que nunca haya dado nuestro país. Verdaderas leyendas del genero, cualquiera que haya seguido minimamente el heavy metal en los últimos 20 años sabra que Baron Rojo es nuestra banda mas internacional, un grupo que traspaso fronteras y consiguió un estatus que ninguna otra formación nacida en la península ha logrado desde entonces repetir. Los grupos españoles parecen eternamente condenados a vivir atados al mercado nacional con leves incursiones en territorio latinoamericano y en algunos países de Europa, sin embargo Baron fue un combo conocido en cualquier país y de hecho aun hoy es la primera referencia de cualquier extranjero cuando preguntas si conoce alguna banda española.
While in England the hard rock explosion was taking place with the NWOBHMM, a group was formed in Spain as a spin-off of another successful band, Coz. The Castro brothers, Carlos and Armando, were joined by “Sherpa” and Hermes, and Baron took off quickly, never better said. In 1981 they recorded their first album, a declaration of intentions entitled “Larga Vida Al Rock N' Roll” with songs such as the title track, the one with the same name as the band, and the version of Luis Eduardo Aute's “Anda Suelto Satanas”. The success was immediate, with appearances on the radio and TVE (at that time there were still only two channels) included, and they even made a visit to England to present the album, which included several live cameos with Bruce Dickinson himself months before he joined Maiden, who also helped them in the English adaptation of the lyrics of their second album...
Mientras en Inglaterra se producia la explosión del rock duro con la NWOBHMM se formaba en España un grupo como escisión de otra banda de éxito, Coz. A los hermanos de Castro, Carlos y Armando, se les unirían “Sherpa” y Hermes, y el Baron despego rápidamente, nunca mejor dicho. En el 81 graban su primer disco, toda una declaración de intenciones titulada “Larga Vida Al Rock N’ Roll” con temas como el que dio titulo al disco, el que se llamaba igual que el grupo, y la versión de Luis Eduardo Aute “Anda Suelto Satanas”. El éxito fue inmediato, con apariciones en la radio y TVE (por aquel entonces todavía había solo dos canales) incluidas, y hasta hicieron una visita a Inglaterra para presentar el álbum, que incluyo varios cameos en vivo con el mismísimo Bruce Dickinson meses antes de que entrara en Maiden, quien además les ayudaría en la adaptación al ingles de las letras de su segundo disco…
Yes, during their stay in the islands during that year (where they made an attempt to change their name to Red Baron), the biggest and most emblematic LP of their career, “Volumen Brutal”, was born. The album, recorded at Kingsway Studios owned by Ian Gillan, and released in '82, would be an international success, because although only in our country it went platinum with 125,000 copies sold at that time, it had an excellent reception in Europe and Japan, and the English version obtained a sensational position in the charts of that country. Their popularity will increase even more when they burst the legendary London Marquee appearing with them Dickinson on stage, or when they played at the Greyhound and Michael Schenker got on.
Si, en su estancia en las islas durante ese año (donde hicieron un amago de pasar a llamarse Red Baron), se gestara el Lp mas grande y emblemático de su carrera, “Volumen Brutal”. El plástico, grabado en los estudios Kingsway propiedad de Ian Gillan, y publicado en el ’82, seria un suceso a nivel internacional, pues si bien solo en nuestro país fue disco de platino con 125.000 copias vendidas en aquellos tiempos, tuvo una excelente acogida en Europa y en Japon, y la versión en ingles obtuvo un sensacional puesto en las listas de aquel país. Su popularidad aumentara aun mas cuando revientan el legendario Marquee londinense apareciendo con ellos Dickinson en escena, o cuando tocaron en el Greyhound y se subio Michael Schenker.
Baron Rojo already rubbed shoulders with the “creme de la creme” of European metal, and that led them to participate in the Reading Festival of that year, becoming one of the best metal bands of the Old Continent, with an incredible prestige and drawing power. No other Hispanic band has even managed to equal this milestone that the group established in England. The legendary Hammersmith Odeon would also fall at their feet when they played with Hawkwind. Their tour of South America, another event, and if the band could have accepted the offer to accompany Whitesnake on their world tour, perhaps their name would be even bigger in today's international arena.
Baron Rojo ya se codea con la “creme de la creme” del metal europeo, y eso les lleva a participar meritoriamente en el festival de Reading de aquel año, convirtiéndose en una de las mejores formaciones de metal del Viejo Continente, con un prestigio y un poder de convocatoria increíbles. Ningún otro grupo hispano ha logrado siquiera igualar este hito que el grupo establecio en Inglaterra. El legendario Hammersmith Odeon también caería rendido a sus pies en su descarga junto a Hawkwind. Su tour por Sudamerica, otro acontecimiento, y si el grupo pudiera haber aceptado la oferta de acompañar a Whitesnake en su gira mundial, quizás su nombre seria aun mucho mas grande en la actualidad internacional mente hablando.
“Metalmorphosis” was another giant step forward in their impeccable career, which led them to share the headliner at the Heavy Sound Festival in Bruges in 1983 with Gary Moore, placing them above bands of the caliber of Uriah Heep and Golden Earring. That live power would be later collected in “Baron Al Rojo Vivo”, a live double recorded with spectacular technical means in a Pabellon de Deportes del Real Madrid crowded by no less than 12,000 people. If we join the strong impact that rock had in our country in the first half of the 80's with the undeniable quality of the group, the formula of their success does not seem to have any secret, and in spite of everything nobody has been able to repeat it. In 1984 they were called again by another Belgian festival, and the call of Latin America would take them to tour South America where they were received as any internationally renowned band, leaving behind a good number of large venues with the sign “no tickets available”.
“Metalmorfosis” fue otro paso de gigante en su impecable y trayectoria, que les llevo a compartir la cabeza de cartel en el Heavy Sound Festival de Brujas en el 83 con Gary Moore, colocándose por encima de bandas del calibre de Uriah Heep y Golden Earring. Ese poderío en vivo quedaría mas tarde recogido en “Baron Al Rojo Vivo”, un doble en directo grabado con espectaculares medios técnicos en un Pabellon de Deportes del Real Madrid abarrotado por nada menos que 12.000 personas. Si unimos el fuerte calado que el rock tenia en nuestro país en la primera mitad de los 80 con la innegable calidad del grupo, la formula de su éxito no parece tener secreto alguno, y a pesar de todo nadie ha logrado repetirlo. En el 84 vuelven a ser reclamados por otro festival belga, y la llamada de America Latina les llevaría a realizar una gira por tierras sudeamericanas en la que fueron recibidos como cualquier banda de renombre internacional, dejando tras de si un buen numero de grandes recintos con el cartel de “no hay entradas”.
“En Un Lugar De La Marcha” once again earned gold record status just like their previous works, which had all reached that designation and even platinum. “Siempre Estais Ahí” was another live album made up of leftovers from their previous release. A contract that did not come to fruition with the all-powerful EMI could have launched them to the definitive world stardom. The possibility vanished and the group continued to belong to Chapa/Zafiro, the label that had given so much for them and with which they had lived their years of greatest glory. However, this fact would gradually restrict them to the national market, closing some doors to a greater expansion, a situation that would materialize in the limitation of their shows to the national territory, except for some visits to France and isolated tours in Latin America.
“En Un Lugar De La Marcha” volvió a ganar la categoría de disco de oro al igual que sus anteriores trabajos, que habían llegado todos a tal denominación e incluso al platino. “Siempre Estais Ahí” fue otro directo conformado por los sobrantes de su anterior entrega. Un contrato que no llego a buen puerto con la todopoderosa EMI pudo lanzarles al definitivo estrellato mundial. La posibilidad se esfumo y el grupo siguió perteneciendo a Chapa/Zafiro, el sello que tanto había dado por ellos y con el que había vivido sus años de mayor gloria. Sin embargo este hecho paulatinamente les iria restringiendo al mercado estatal, cerrándose algunas puertas a una mayor expansión, situación que se concretaría en la limitación de sus shows al territorio nacional, salvando alguna visita a Francia y giras aisladas por Iberoamerica.
They would not repeat their past success, and things went definitely wrong when after three rather weak albums, “Tierra de Nadie”, “No Va Mas” and “Obstinato”, Hermes and “Sherpa” left in 89 and disputed the rights to the group's name with their former band mates. After some difficult years the situation would stabilize, although from that moment on many musicians would pass through their ranks. Avispa would publish their “Desafio” in 92, Zafiro, already “absorbed” by BMG/Ariola, Zafiro would again take advantage of their glory days with the edition of a compilation, “Larga Vida Al Baron”, that worked quite well in terms of sales, then Clave would publish “Arma Secreta” in 97... the thing seemed to go without direction, but a new visit to the other side of the pond would revitalize them by the warmth and the reception found there.
Ya no volverían a repetir el éxito pasado, y las cosas se torcieron definitivamente cuando tras tres discos algo flojos, “Tierra de Nadie”, “No Va Mas” y “Obstinato”, Hermes y “Sherpa” se marchan en el 89 y le disputan a sus antiguos compañeros los derechos sobre el nombre del grupo. Tras unos años difíciles la situación se estabilizaría, aunque a partir de ese momento muchos músicos pasarían por sus filas. Avispa publicaría su “Desafio” en el 92, Zafiro, ya “absorbido” por BMG/Ariola, Zafiro sacaría de nuevo tajada de sus días de gloria con la edición de un recopilatorio, “Larga Vida Al Baron”, que funciono bastante bien a nivel de ventas, luego Clave les editaría “Arma Secreta” en el 97… la cosa parecía ir sin rumbo, pero una nueva visita al otro lado del charco les revitalizaría por el calor y el recibimiento allí encontrados.
So Baron Rojo, already settled in their formation, recognized as a legend in our rock and discovered by a new generation of rockers, are celebrating twenty years as a group, and to celebrate it they release their latest album “20+” with new company, Zero, a very hard work that encourages from its title to continue two more decades at the front of the ship of Hispanic rock and that is continued by the dvd recorded in their performance last year in the Madrid room Aqualung. Having regained the prestige and the admiration of their public, a new invasion of the Baron into a world of metal that for this band no longer has any frontiers.
Asi Baron Rojo, ya asentados en su formación, reconocidos como leyenda dentro de nuestro rock y descubiertos por una nueva generación de rockeros, cumplen veinte años como grupo, y para celebrarlo lanzan su ultimo disco “20+” con nueva compañía, Zero, un trabajo muy duro que anima desde su titulo a seguir dos décadas mas al frente de la nave del rock hispano y que es continuado por el dvd grabado en su actuación del año pasado en la madrileña sala Aqualung. Recuperado el prestigio y la admiración de su publico, se prepara una nueva invasión del Baron a un mundo del metal que para este grupo ya no tiene ninguna frontera.
