Interesting commentary of feminism. I am a feminist. I have been a feminist my whole life, although when I was a child there was no name for how I perceived my role vis-a-vis males.
I never wanted to be anyone's equal or dis-equal. I just wanted to be myself. I didn't want someone to tell me what my role was in life based on biological characteristics. I just wanted an equal shot to decide if I wanted to be an athlete. If I wanted to study math or literature. If I wanted to work outdoors chopping wood or indoors baking a cake.
The biological distinctions you focus on do equip me to do certain things that men cannot do. I can have children. Glorious. That's it.
As I grew I noted that there were men who were stronger and more determined that I was, and there were men who were weaker. Certainly more cowardly.
Why could I not avail myself of all opportunities in life and prove myself by performance? Earn my place through merit?
I am not the same as a man, but then men are not the same as each other. We are all different. Level the playing field. That's all I ever asked for. Give me the same chance to be a fully developed person that you would offer to anyone else.
That's feminism. That's the true definition of a meritocracy.
I never asked for any favors. I never asked for special treatment. I just asked that you (society) allow me to hope, to aspire and to achieve.
That's not left wing. That's fair.
I agree with all your points. We should strive for equal opportunity. We should strive to remove bias both for and against. Both of these are difficult to fully achieve, as there are so many influences all around us.
We need to understand what we really want and what we can realistically achieve. Then pursue whatever that might be. This applies to both men and women.
