Hierarchies are a natural rule of life as you've mentioned.
It helps a lot while sometimes if abused can have serious side effects on people in the lower levels.

As with many things, hierarchies are a tool that can help us achieve things. If overused it can be a problem. They should be applied when their purpose makes sense.
