RE: Is Socialism being used as a path to Fascism?

in Economics4 years ago

Extremes of right or left tend to be bad, as we have seen with Nazis (ironically called National Socialism) and Communists. I worry more about fascism being a path to fascism right now. We have various leaders who are effectively dictators and very few communist states. I see a lot of people complaining about the media, but in the UK most papers are right wing. Some of those are getting worried about Boris though. Just today I heard the author of this book saying that an independent, but state funded, media like the BBC is valuable in encouraging other media to be less biased. Journalists are people too, but you have to take into account who pays their wages. That tends to be a very limited number of billionaires who are probably pals with certain politicians. A lot of so-called 'citizen journalists' may be even more biased.

Obviously the Trump/Biden contest is the prominent case of right vs left, but how much of a socialist is Biden? I do not expect him to seize control of the means of production. Life under him would be much like under other Democrats with the option to vote him out down the line. I am much more worried about Trump who has done all he can to discredit the media and is sowing doubt about the integrity of the voting system. Those seem like the actions of a potential dictator. I know people see him as an alternative to the established politicians, but it seems he mostly cares about himself. His love of dictators and dismissal of science puts the world in danger.

I am no political expect, but I can see danger signs. The media I read will have a bias, but the words of some politicians scare me enough.

We certainly live in interesting times.

Sort:

The path to fascism could go either way (right-wing or left-wing approaches). In regards to Trump, many see him as anti-establishment. Therefore, would assume he would oppose fascism. In reality, he has proven time and time again he is all about his ego. This could lead us directly down the path to fascism but I think it will be met with too much opposition. I don't think Biden stands for anything. He forgets half of what he is saying. People will vote for him because he isn't Trump. If Biden wins, I would expect him to be a puppet president, which could be much more dangerous.

In regards to the UK, Boris Johnson appears incompetent and disorganized. His cabinet is just as bad. I would also question his integrity when it comes to matters such as Covid-19 and Brexit. I support Brexit but the campaigning in 2016 was manipulative. As it stands, I think the UK is much further from fascism than Australia but things can change very quickly.

At least we agree on some things :) I don't really know what Biden stands for, but he is probably a safer (and larger) pair of hands than The Donny. It depends on who you think is really in control. The Reps have sold their soul to Donny to get power regardless of the cost and seem to campaign mostly by preying on fears rather than offering hope. It's all a big mess.

Boris desperately wanted to be PM, but he's not up to the job. I am not sure he was even in favour of 'Brexit', but it was a convenient campaign to ride on.

Stay informed and stay sane :)
