Weekend Kitchen Adventures

Though I much prefer the sewing room or library, I have spent a lot of time in the kitchen over the years. Now my daughter Kathleen does the meals and I just do seasonal projects, mostly.

Habanero peppers have thrived in my other daughter's garden this year. So much so that while her husband makes hot sauce, I am dehydrating the extra peppers.

Be sure to wear gloves while handling hot peppers. Do NOT touch your eyes. Although if you do, rinse the eye with milk, not water. I think this works because the pepper juice is fat soluble.

I also dusted off an old cookie recipe that calls for sweetened condensed milk. Having only evaporated milk in the pantry, I had to sweeten it myself.

1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
1 cup sugar
a few drops of vanilla

Bring to a boil, reduce heat, simmer about 15 minutes to slightly thicken.

That was it for me in the kitchen. Until I get to the mountains for a bunch of apples--then it will be time to make apple butter!
